Earliest recorded tropical cyclone forms in eastern Pacific

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The earliest tropical cyclone on record formed Saturday in the eastern North Pacific, far off the coast of Mexico.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Tropical Depression One-E had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph (55 kph), and while it was not forecast to strengthen into a named tropical storm before weakening, “it cannot be ruled out.”

The storm was expected to fade to a remnant low by Sunday night.

The storm was centered about 730 miles (1,175 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula and posed no threat to land.

The Hurricane Center said it is the earliest formation of tropical cyclone in the eastern North Pacific since the satellite era began in 1966. The basin’s season normally starts in mid-May, while the Atlantic hurricane season kicks in on June 1.

Have been working on punting the base together for our 2nd yard shed.
Just finished it, just need to spray it with a wood preservative now.
I'll do that tomorrow.
Have a few weed trees and dead ohias that could threaten our house and/or cars in windy conditions.
In the next couple of days I'll begin clearing brush to get to them and cut them down.
Time to get ready for summer's windy season.

Still a long ways out but apparently the Pacific's first 2020 hurricane brewing:

Currently Douglas is on track to become a hurricane and then weaken to a tropical storm before hitting us around Monday.

Of course, the track may change between now and then.  But this is the first one of the season we need to keep an eye on.

Of course, the track may change between now and then.

Thanks terracore, let’s hope the track changes.  Even if it’s not a hurricane, on its current course we would be in for some downpours.  I like the “How to use the cone“ explanation under the map.  Did NOAA always include that, or is it new this year?

As of now... indications are a direct hit in the puna/hilo area just under hurricane strength. All models are relatively the same at this point.  This sounds just like a repeat of Hurricane Iselle in 2016.

If the current info holds true we could see sustained winds near 60-70 MPH with higher gusts. It shows it retaining tropical storm strength after passing the BI.

Key Messages:

1. Douglas is expected to move near or over portions of the
Hawaiian Islands this weekend, and there is an increasing chance
that strong winds and heavy rainfall could affect portions
of the state beginning on Sunday. Interests on the Hawaiian
Islands should continue to monitor the progress of Douglas.

Anyone know if if anyone locally has generators in stock?  Probably not. Seems as soon as there is a hint of a hurricane /topical storm  on its way...they sell out. I remember when Iselle came through our community. Power was out in Paradise park for weeks.

Home Depot has a few 8,000 watt $1100 ones left as of yesterday. There was one open box 3500 watt rated one at $550, but I would be suspect if it was any good.
