Don't know about the other stuff, but newspapers are shredded and used by the local flower shops as packing material. I happened to be dropping mine off when a van arrived and some guys got out, sorted through the newspapers and threw them in their van. Being curious, I asked and that's how I found out about the flower shops.

I don't know where the recycled materials go. Once, I did talk to a Recycle Hawaii representative who was at the Kea'au transfer station who seemed quite knowledgeable about the operations. I asked him why they didn't recycle more items, like the City of Palo Alto did. He said that it's a matter of being able to find recycling operators who will take the stuff.
He mentioned that the recycling facilities at Kea'au and Pahoa have contracts with different operators and there's a small difference in what each will accept. I thought that all of the recycling at the various transfer stations were handled by the same organization.
While the 2 liter PETE beverage containers and glass liquor bottles are not covered by the HI5 bill, they can still be recycled. Granted that's only useful if a person is inclined to recycle anyway. It certainly doesn't encourage those who don't already participate in recycling. The reason that I heard that Lingle gave for not including the larger plastic bottles in the HI5 bill was about not hurting the poor by increasing the checkout cost. Sounded like a crock to me.

In regards to local politics?
Which I assume in a state as small as ours includes the gubernatorial race?
Geeee...I dunno...
Don't seem to be able to make up my mind.

I seem to remember Randy Iwase almost being a "default" candidate when none of the so-called big names in the Democratic Party were willing to take on Lingle. I don't say that to be against him, it just seems like he was the only one brave enough to do it, and I actually admire him for it.
Why is Lingle so scary to the Democrats? Iwase is running against Bush almost as much as he is against Lingle, although he has mentioned other issues.
Hmmmmm . . . maybe I should be asking what things were like BEFORE Lingle.
A somewhat confused, but cheerful Democrat,
Jerry

Good cheer is good thing, Jerry.
Don't forget to vote tomorrow, folks!
And you're left, once again, with little to say

Hmmmmm..... before Lingle.... the Old Boys Club... whether I agree with her or disagree with her stance on issues, she has made made changes within the boys club.
She also was the one who kept the cesspool changes on the table and then exempted the Big island. I am not a Sierra Club devotee BUT I do not think cesspools are an acceptable wastewater system. IMHO.

Aloha Kapohocat,
Right on Kat, again you very much hit it on the head, you are very astute )
You get to the heart of the matter and succintly give us a balanced view point.
Since we aren't able to get perfection, Linda Lingle has made a difference.
Isn't that a bonus to look at what really has happened to benefit Hawaii?
She also put the bill through with regards to being able to bring your pets into Hawaii without a pet having to spend three months or 30 days in a quarantine station, and made those changes possible. That was a very big deal that cost people much money and unessary stress and grief every day in Haawaii. She was the one who listened when the others (especially those in charge in the USDA quarantine station) would not for years on this subject when it was very relevant for many families and their beloved pets. It came out that the person in charge was not keeping up with new medical advances to serve their own self interest, not of the customers or pets that are served. I worked on that campaign for it to happen and it took lots of individual professionals who gave of their time gratus, lots of persistance, time and money to make that happen.
When you all are done talking about this and want a bit of relaxation you might want to take in a clip of some yesterday music of Hawaii here. Hawaii Five-O

It would be so much better with the palm trees and Jack Lord, but it does bring back the memories and reminese about a time of
being more care free in Hawaii.
Aloha all!

Now that the voting is over and the results will soon be coming in, I just want to thank everyone for their input. I especially want to compliment all the Punatics who participated for the remarkable overall level of civility, respect, and tolerance shown. If those guys in Hilo, Honolulu, and Washington could show the decency we experienced here, what a better world it would be.
Aloha and cheers to all,
Jerry

I think you give Lingle to much credit! Actually most of the people do for that matter too...except for Maui residents who lived on Maui while she was Mayor. She left that place in a mess!
As for thw Quarantine issue, that was being worked on years before she came into office!
As Gov. Of the state I think she is responsible for the Dam accident on Kauai. Her and the head of the DLNR should have both lost their jobs after that accident happened. Let me also put in Mufi Hanneman's name too. Once he opted to dump raw sewage into the Ala Wai without proper warnings being posted, and local folks started complaining of illness from swimming and getting open sores.

In my limited experience with the DLNR, other state agencies and the COH in regards to SMA's - the right hand never seems to know what the left hand is doing and vice versa...
