Disposing of old pump pressure tank
#1
Will they accept it at the transfer stations, or is there someplace “special” I have to take it?

In Hilo there is a special bin for metal items.

Pahoa dump also has a metal bin. The one in Keaau seems to always be roped off. Those tanks have a rubber "bladder" inside. I wonder if that can be removed or??

Pahoa is closed off too.

I was wondering if I had to drill a hole in it or something, to keep the workers from thinking it would explode (even though there isn’t any pressure in it since the bladder failed).

I’m taking green waste to Hilo, I’ll see what I can do there, Mahalo for your replies!

The ability to remove the bladder depends on the tank. Many are designed so that the bladder can be replaced but getting a replacement might be a challenge. If the in/out pipe on the bottom is attached with a bolt on flange you can probably pull it out through there. The bladder will be bigger than you expect and a bit difficult to remove but very doable. Some are not removeable and are attacked midpoint with a metal band on the inside. I don't know how to tell in advance. Probably not worth the effort unless you have a very large tank and you do intend to replace the bladder.

Replacing the bladder was not possible. Anyway, I pried out the valve and took it to the Hilo station. Several people in the metal area and no one said anything to me when I put it in the bin.

Can I ask how many  years these pressure tanks usually last?

Correction to Obie's post: Pahoa scrap metal bin is open. I was just there.
