The Hilo airport's main runway has had a complete malfunction and shutdown of its lights. As a result, no flights will be allowed after dark, and tonight's flight from LAX has already been cancelled. The reporting is sketchy so far, but here's a link:

What a mess! My Sunday night United flight has been postponed until the next morning so I will miss my connections. And United is still listing the night flights as an option for the next few days!

Of course Hawaiian can still land their interisland flights on the small runway, so it really only affects the competition. How convenient.

Hawaiian Air & Southwest both continue flying into Hilo at night.
Southwest has a Honolulu to Hilo flight scheduled for
9:45 PM arrival tonight.

My wife was supposed to fly out of Hilo last night. Fortunately (for her, less so for me), I was able to drive her to Kona for the KOA-LAX flight, and get back about 4 hours after I left Pahoa.

A United Airlines and Southwest Airlines flight were affected that night. Southwest also canceled Sunday morning's scheduled seven a.m. flight from Hilo to Honolulu because it did not have a plane in place.
