I appreciate the nostalgia but I suspect some rose colored glasses here.  Hippies arrived in the '60s, crime has always existed and the population hasn't been ~25K for over 100 years.

To  double A Ron Sir or Mamm - it was dark so sorry maybe 50k human beans at that time or were you here then also -

As for hippies en mass we were too busy working double shifts to notice

Going fishing for fresh salmon .
Panning for gold near Omak

And taking the kiddos to the coast at low tide to dig for Raz
or clams and goo eee  duck clams but mostly the Razer clams .
