Piano on the second floor

As part of my continuing effort to make the topics on Punaweb as esoteric as possible, I have a question: Have any of you Punatics had the need to move a piano to a high floor (your house is elevated). If so, how did you get it there? Also, do you take any special precautions with your piano in light of the weather?

Are we talking grand piano or upright?

Many people have some "heat sticks" (I don't know the proper term) for the humidity when we are in rainy periods in their pianos.

Hire a couple of Tongans (shout out to John Rabi) to haul it up the stairs for you.

And you may want to look into a dehumidifier for the room. I don't know what the relative energy usage is compared to the device John Dirgo refers to. LG makes a good one, the Sears' Kenmore that we have is made by LG.

My neighbor here in Kapoho keeps her Steinway Grand in a ground level room with A/C going all the time. Can't blame her!!

Okay here is what I've learned:

* Puna is hell on pianos.
* You can mitigate with dehumidifying sticks, a room dehumidifier, or by runnig the A/C nonstop.
* Tongans are very big and useful.

After the Tongans deliver my musical instrument, should I have them stay for lunch, and are they good at other things requiring big men to push things?

Measure the doorway first, too, to make sure the piano will fit through it. Some older houses have small doors that a piano may not fit through. We have trouble moving things in and out of our house because it is an old house with small doors.

Our neighbor has a grand piano and a baby grand in her living room and they don't do any air conditioning or anything. Lots of ventilation and it is a big room with high ceilings as well. They are near the ocean, too, I would think it would be hard on the pianos, but they are usually in tune and working fine.

I have a friend up on Kaiwiki with a nice organ. Stop laughing, he tells me he has heard every organ joke I can ever come up with. It is pretty damp up there so he keeps damp sticks in it. Between him & his partner there is quite a lot of musical equiptment in the house and all of it is doing pretty well. I will see if I can cajole him into making a post on care of the organ or piano.

He used the moving company that unloaded his container to get his organ up the stairs and into the house.
