Buying chickens from Pahoa

I just want people to be aware of buying chickens from Pahoa Farm and Fertilizer. We had bought 3 pullets from them. They assured us that there was a 99% chance that they would be all female. Well a few months later we relized we had two roosters and 1 hen. Either we have bad luck or the % is wrong. I wouldn't have a problem if they just told us that they were straight run. I wonder how many other people got roosters?

Bad luck Jade...maybe you need some coconut pie. LOL...I have a friend who finds wild males and relocates them down the way to another sub since they are so loud...well, actually I think she's letting one hang around 'cause wants some chickies now. You should have a new brood before too long though, right? I'm new to the whole chicken thing, but am going to be "chicken sitting" for a friend who will be away for a couple of months...couple of Rhode Island Reds...very friendly...very much like pets to her. I'm looking forward to it...all chicken tips (not wings) are welcome!

We actually returned one of the rooster back to them.(for free) They said they would take it. I didn't have the heart to eat him or just let him become someone elses problem. My dilema is now I want a few more chickens. I only want hens though. That is why I was wondering if it was truly bad luck or if there supplier isn't as good as they say. Good luck with the chicken sitting. They really do make great pets.

Would your friend please go by our place and catch the rooster who seems to have taken our yard as his own? My cousin's son and his friends tried to catch him a couple of times with no luck. He has an internal clock that's off by quite a few hours and sometimes goes off right under our bedroom window at 4am! Jon

A lot depends on the breed of chicken. Some are much easier to sex than others. Where do they get their chicks? We bought direct from the mainland and the only roosters were with the straight run breed.
Mainland orders require that you buy a minimum of 25. Dells used to let you sign up for smaller amounts and then they would place an order when they had enough requests. Jerry Art and Orchids B&B http://www.artandorchids.com

I don't know where they get them. I heard they have stopped importing them due to the bird flu. Dell's no longer sells them.

We caught roosters this way:
Roosters roos in trees at night when it gets dark. Just watch which tree they go to. Once it is dark, take bright flashlight and sine it on them. The light wakes them, then stuns them and they fall out of the tree. Grab it while stunned. Good luck! Just another day in P A R A D I S E !!
