on o'ahu, we have firms such as homeworks and graham builders that "design/build" your home. there's a lot of information here about package homes. but, what if any are the companies that do "design/build" on the big island?

I don't think I would want a general contractor to design my house. [ ]

Oh! Sorry, I misunderstood your posting. I assume you would save money buy having it done in one-shop. I don't know of an operation like that on the Big Island.

The closest I've seen is someone like Cat (Kapohocat), who coordinates the draftspeople & architects, building/planning department (and Dept of Health for cesspool/septic) and also manages the contractors.
To me, the advantage of someone like that is that the contractors, etc are not her employees, giving her the freedom to pick and choose the team to best do the specific job. Maybe the design/build firms are similar (I don't have enough experience with them to say).

Frequently we will have the same sort of services as on the other islands but they won't be packaged the same. My favorite pet shop looks like a garage but my next favorite one doesn't look like a retail establishment at all. Neither one really has any signs at all, you just know that's what they do. We get our appliances at a place called "Sauces & Propane" and get our small engines worked on at a tiny shop which has a sign about 8" x 10" hidden in the shrubbery. There is a lot more networking to get anything done and if you want something done you ask one person and then in a couple days someone entirely else (or their second cousin) will drop by to see about it. Much more low key and much more community based than the other islands.
Why would you want a "design/build" company? Most folks kinda already know what they want in a home, then get together with an architect or draftsperson and then ask around for some contractors. What would a design build company do that would be different and why would you want that difference?

i agree with you about it being, "much more low key and much more community based than the other islands." references are always a plus. my brother's uncle's cousin's auntie's son........networking.
it would be different with a design/build company in that you are dealing with "the company". they provide all the resources or should i say, the architects and contractors. the homeowner is directly involved in the "design" aspect and does not get involved with the contractors. the contractors answer only to "the company".
i tried to get an addition done on this house in kailua (o'ahu) and used both "methods". the reason it didn't happen is because they couldn't stay within the budget. or should i say, my budget.
