High carbon, 5G connected hippies - - want to stop another geothermal plant. Burning Man, which brings 70,000-80,000 people to the middle of nowhere in gas powered vehicles, where they set up high voltage bands with blazing lights and decibel busting amplifiers, as well as the temporary city that's created while the event takes place - - wants to stop a geothermal plant. After watching the Leilani residents who claimed Pele would go after PGV, only to discover she came for them, perhaps Pele like other Hawaiians might consider a vacation in Nevada?
Perhaps geothermal isn't perfect, but isn't the real question whether it's better than coal or nuclear, or whatever petroleum byproduct we import and burn in Hilo?
Burning Man, which owns or operates over 4,000 acres in the area and attracts 70,000 people to the region each year for its famed festival, said BLM’s greenlight for Ormat to build 19 geothermal drilling exploration wells and build 2.8 miles of access roads arbitrarily failed to consider the bigger picture. If viable resources are found, it will lead to a power plant being built,
Ormat is a leading developer in the field, and already runs several geothermal plants in Nevada, California, Oregon, Hawaii and elsewhere.

That's really good! Usually you snap at the first word.

Funny thing is that the folks who want to stop the PGV expansion don't even realize that the expansion will make the plant quieter which has always been one of the issues... They are going to replace the existing 12 generators with 3 vastly more efficient ones that are also quieter.
So these 70,000 people who attend each year don't have an environmental impact on the area?

The impacts of tourism need not be considered.

Geothermal is said to have life cycle emissions 4 times less than solar. It's misguided to oppose this. Iceland knows better.

Yep, drill baby drill !!! Lets get independent.
Its not like all those dark color panels paving the landscape are not contributing to the temps +ing
++ all the child labor and strip mining to make these magic panels.
Thats all behind the curtain.

I don't single out alternative energy tech for exemption from environmental standards. Make decent standards and enforce them. Pick the tech that has the least environmental/societal cost. I'm sure that mining the materials for solar panels and batteries has environmental costs but strip mining coal and stockpiling the vast quantities of coal ash produced does too. Burning coal puts mercury and radioactivity into the air in addition to all the CO2. It's all about the alternatives.
My understanding is that decreasing the albedo by adding dark solar panels is more than compensated for by the reduction in CO2.
If my off-grid solar system has similar environmental costs to using grid power but allows me to have microwave popcorn while my neighbor is sitting in the cold and dark, I'll take that as a win without too much guilt.
By the way, if Bill Clinton rode the Lolita express, throw him in jail, too.

In reality, though,
How much quieter?
A trivial amount. With the total sound volume elevated by lots more of them?
What kind of penalties will they face when then quietness doesnt happen? Who will enforce them? Just pay a little fine and keep on running because after all, its already installed and running.
Before the 2018 lava, I lived in the middle of Leilani estates and the noise/low level rumbling at night was annoyingly everpresent. Like an overloaded freight train coming at you. It made the ground quiver.
Yeah geothermal seems like the ideal solution until you live near a plant.

Going from 12 generators to 3 (initially, then a 4th to be added) should make quite a difference? But the noise from drilling new wells is a different issue. Losing that buffer of tall albizia trees didn't help.
