Septic Tanks in HPP?
#1
Hi all! I've been reading Punaweb for years and love it! I have a question... Can you put septic tanks in HPP??? and if so how many rooms max can be put on a tank?? I'd rather us septic than cesspool.

You can put septic tanks in, and MUST if you house is makai in of 5th in HPP, or if you have a commercial use (school, church, etc.....)
The sizing is based on bedrooms. They make different sized tanks & I know you can get commercial sized single tanks (hubby was on committee to get our church in septic compliance)

You will hear a lot of people ask why would you if you don't need (even the guys at health dept...) but it is better for the environment & easier to clean out if needed.... although even better for the environment( but worse for maintenance) are the aerobic systems that are required by many mainland communities....

Mahalo Carey, I agree it is better for the earth. Somewhere I read you can have up to 5 bedrooms max on a septic in HPP is this true??

Carey - I have had long conversations with Ron Nickles on this same issue. He is a 30 yr+ resident, and a licensed civil engineer who has been involved with many of the residential and commercial wastewater systems on the East side and some on the West. The testing he has done here is that in areas of HPP, and Leilani to name a second the percolation issue is the same with either one.

Ron and then Cody Chapin and I have also had long conversations about wastewater systems, wells and the fresh water lens.

Also 4th in HPP is the last road typically as a guideline that must have septic (or aerobic if less than 11' elevation) as you head uphill, it is actually the elevation that determines it along with lot size.

The maximum size available for a residential/SFR septic tank (1250 gal) is sized to 5 bedrooms (not bathrooms). You can have more than one wastewater system if your lot is sized to allow two wastewater systems. The configurations for 6 bedrooms and up can include 1 cesspool, 1 septic, or 2 septics typing into one leach field. But can not include 2 cesspools. This is right out of the DOH this AM.
