"When did we decide to collectively abandon our ability to reason independently?"

When everyone got a handheld computer with 100,000 plus times more processing power than the computer aboard "The Eagle" when it landed on the moon, which now allows some to call that landing fake!

"With a nod to sir Orwell I would like to say 2+2=5."

Just by saying that, there are some who will believe you. Verbatim.

"No one needs to be saved from that information."

The ones who will believe it do. Further, no matter how one argues, 2 +2 will ALWAYS BE 4. Claiming the volcano mountains protect us from certain catastrophic events from a hurricane is NOT ALWAYS TRUE.

"I’m not sure who either side of these bickerings thinks they are saving or serving or something."

One is posting untrue myths, the other is posting proven scientific fact. I think someone (even just one) could be saved, served or something else when realizing the difference.

ETA: To be clear, I AM NOT calling for any form of censorship whatsoever. Fact checking is completely separate.

But no, TomK says that I said blah blah blah.. and to think he wants us to believe he’s a scientist. And even worse.. that some believe him..

I'm struggling to understand how Katrina can be used as an example of the Big Island mountains protecting the island from a storm, especially for those who live on the east side. Land certainly didn't protect New Orleans from Katrina, nor did it with Iselle and Puna.

No they don’t.

Oops, that was bit strong. How about: Perhaps they don’t need to be saved…? Is that even a thought that can be held briefly (before being dismissed) in the heads of either side in the bickering?

Cheers,

I suppose we can just let those people fall off the edge of the earth.

As this topic happened to catch me with a few minutes to waste, I'll reply that of course no one needs to be saved, or educated, or helped. But given that the health and wellbeing of individuals is interconnected with the health and wellbeing of their community, it's probably worth trying to inform people not to drink bleach, or that LGBTQ folks aren't a threat, and the like.

In the end, people will believe whatever they want to, but to deny the value in promoting facts and reality-based reasoning is morbidly cynical and ultimately self-defeating.

ETA: Agreed that punaweb has reached a nadir (so now this qualifies as Hawaii related Wink )

How about we just let nature take it's course and leave all future Darwin Award winners to their own devices?

Unless of course, you want people who need to be told not to drink bleach contributing to the gene pool.

You, and everyone else, are alive only because someone choose to take care of you when you could not take care of yourself. This includes bothering to inform and educate you what harms you and those around you. Least you can do is pay this forward?

Darwin is commonly misunderstood - cooperation is key to survival.
