Spam attacks
#1
Some of you may have noticed the occasional spam postings on Punaweb. These seem to be originating in eastern Europe and are likely to continue.

We have been removing such posters at a rate of several a day. If something obviously inappropriate appears on this site just be patient - it's not possible to monitor 24 hours a day.

Thanks,

With the subject of "Spam Attacks" I was expecting some new musubi recipes! (Ratz!)

You are so good at keeping the spam off the site that most of us don't even know there's a problem!

New musubi recipes?? I have my musubi presses but I only know the basic spam and egg recipe. What are some others? I'm not interested in any Russian recipes.

I was hoping that you had a way of turning the spammers into spam. Now that would be cool!!

Rob, you must be doing an amazing job of "hand-filtering" the spam. I think I've only seen one or two postings of this ilk.

At the risk of rerouting this thread and committing sacrilege on so-called local customs... having grown up in the Islands on Spam and Vienna sausages, I just don't get the on-going attraction of Spam. Maybe people don't know where it originates. I suppose that it's better than putting it in a landfill or feeding more of it back to stockyard animals. And what would people do without all that salt? Hawaii must be keeping Hormel in business with the long running Spam trendiness.

The spammers have been increasingly a problem and I have been removing them fom the site at a rate of about a dozen a day. This is getting tiring.

Warning: I need to go to the mainland for a few days and will not be able to defend the Punaweb perimeter. So if some obnoxious stuff gets posted while I am away you will just have to be patient. Our web master is also off line right now.

Rob,

It is a tough job. If it means anything I think you have been doing a good job keeping these SPAMMERS at bay. If you would like to swap information about these people it could benefit both of us.

Rob,
I assume people like the guy who posted the "Right before camera all wet and soaking babes" simply took advantage of your open membership and made the posting. I'm not educated in these things, but do these Eastern European addresses have anything in common that could provide you a filter?

KonaDave, we don't see anything like this on KonaForum. Is it a case of "when", not "if"?

Warmest aloha for everything both of you do,
Brian

Well, I'm back and have deleted the couple weird postings and about 25 "new members" who appeared with strange credentials. I am not going to discuss my method of tracking them though.

Punaweb is vulnerable unfortunately. We use a simple set up of freeware which we cannot customize much without destroying the site and reconstructing it in some manner. It may come to that someday. I would point out that it appears that most of these spammers are supported in some way by American pharmaceutical companies.

I'll just do my best to guard the gates. What might come to pass would be to add one or more volunteer moderators to help with the deletions if it becomes more burdensome.
