We always walked backwards a bunch of the way when going up. Helps cut down on the burn. Never once thought of biking!
I wish you all the best.

Visiting pedestrians arenʻt encouraged either. You may be able to get down there, but you will not be welcomed. And yes, it IS a sacred place. And they want to keep it that way. I have friends there whoʻve had visitors come in through their closed gate, pick their fruit and even once approached my friend while she was in the lua on their property to ask directions.
Certainty will be the death of us.

it IS a sacred place. … she was in the lua…
Lucky they didn’t catch her in there with a telescope, looking at the moon and stars.
Otherwise she’d be accused of polluting the water table.

Mr. "T" used to yell at the passing tour busses. " I bet you wouldn't take your shoes off in my house!!!"
I wish you all the best.

Nope. Sorry. Only Kalianna can bestow that honor and she can't even see your opinion Julie. (notice that I did not quote)
It was a fine post (albeit quite snarky) Edge. Good job. Virtual trophy. Have a nice day.
ETA: I just realized that Kalianna has already officiated the post in question and it did not earn high marks.
I wish you all the best.

Walk it... duh
Ive been down there 50+ times.....never drove my one chit., but I have got rides back up, thats the killer ....is climbing back up 900' elevation in under 1 mile... its the steepest Road on Earth... you will remember it...
ps some local kine in Honokaa run down to the beach and back up.... every single day.. you may see them.... the most common is a very tan polynesian gal with muscle legs.... she never stops the entire time...

its the = of hiking down to the river in the Grand Canyon, but you dont need the 2 gallons of water / person ...and there aint no donkeys pissing all over a 5' wide trail too...
but you will feel it the same as the GG and you may lose a toe-nail or 2 (weeks later.... from going downhill) if your shoes aint good...
if you go down. walk to end of beach go inland a bit and climb the switch backs to the 2nd or 3rd ocean side switch and thats the best place to take a photo... the trail here on north side of valley is literally 1,000+ yrs old and you will see evidence as the trail is dug out from millions of feet .....making it safer than if it was newer. and pali cliff-like..

I've walked down it and back up (not 50 times) in slippers/sories/flipflops. It was a fair workout but nothing more. It would have been more challenging if raining. Walking accross the river with all of the round rocks was tough in the slippers. My knees are crap now so a repeat isn't likely, although on a good knee day I might try it.

I have hiked that far side switchback. I was interested in seeing the size of threes in the upper lands between the gorges. Never been timbered. The largest I saw was 13' in diameter. Too old to do that trail again.
On too the original purpose of the topic: My 75 year old brother is visiting soon and had Waipio on his bucket list. We did locate a tour guide that can take him down into the valley for $75. A bargain as far as he is concerned. As for myself, I have been there several times and intend to not add my footprints there again. Let it be.
