And hatch can be defined as, "an opening in the deck of a boat or ship leading to the cabin or a lower level, especially a hold." Since most of us live on land rather than on ships, one could surmise that the statement could be a figure of speech, usually referring to an upcoming weather event; poetic license as it were. Now since most of us live below 9000ʻ, one could reasonably eliminate snow as the said upcoming weather event. And since hurricane season is over and tornados and haboobs are not generally found on this island one would surmise that the said upcoming weather event refers to rain. Hence, "batten down the hatches" would probably mean that if one has a convertible and the top is down, one might want to move said convertible into the garage or put the top up, or generalizing, the statement would probably mean that an extended period of rain is coming. I do hope this helps you to understand this terribly complicated concept.
Jeeze, I simply asked a question. FYI, my father was a meteorologist, and I have had a lifelong interest in meteorology, including taking some degree-level courses in the subject. When I saw your comment about battening down the hatches, I looked at various forecasts and couldn't see why one would need to do that. Perhaps you might be using an app predicting a significant storm, hence the question. I didn't think it was because some rain was on the way, given that it's normal for the east side of the island to get a lot of rain, especially during the winter.

Go to the bicker board.
Certainty will be the death of us.

Why? All I've done is ask a couple of simple questions.

HiloJulie,
Two different phone service providers. They have their own proprietary weather apps.
I just use the NWS and bookmark a page with my current location on their map. Sometimes looking at the radar gives a better idea of the weather.

Aren’t discussions about the weather supposed to be benign, non confrontational, even used as a distraction when you’re trying to avoid talking about politics? Religion? County workers?

Who are "they"? Possibly the Puna weatherman on FB. Several days ago he said an extended period of wet weather was likely beginning sometime this week, and he's sticking with it on his latest posting yesterday. Here it is:
"Both the major weather models show a series of jet stream troughs diving south near or over our island chain. This brings an extended period of enhanced windward showers."

She answered that over on the bicker board, it was Weather Underground.
I gave up on Wunderground. I would register my weather station with them and when I would look at it sometime later it was gone from their site. I did notice my neighbors weather station is on there but wundeground only has about 1/3 of the sites that Ambient Weather has.
They both do the same thing but wunderground has many more pop up ads.

Thanks, but I think it's unlikely that forecast would appear on any app. The current NWS statewide forecast says:
" Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Honolulu HI
840 PM HST Mon Dec 9 2024"
" An upper level low passing south of the state Wednesday through Friday could bring an increase of showers over parts of windward Big Island and Maui especially around Thursday night into Friday. At this time, it looks like the main instability and moisture should pass south of the state, but a slight shift northward could bring more enhanced showers. Stay tuned for more details."
