Maku'u Drive is tearing up our cars. We've started using Paradise when we go to Pahoa even though our house is much closer to Maku'u. I was wondering who is responsible for the condition of Maku'u Dr. if anyone knows. Thank you.

Going out on a limb here, but wouldn't that be the HPPOA?

Speeders are responsible for the damage, Hppoa is responsible for repairs.
If you have a specific area of concern, you can report it by filling out the form that can be found here :

Makuu Dr. from from HWY 130 to about 27th is what downtown Hilo was like before they paved it. We avoid it and Pahoa completely and just go to Hilo when we need anything through Shower drive. The new merge lane at Shower and Hwy 130 has made a huge difference in getting out of the subdivision quickly.

I call those inverted speed bumps. Hopefully they will slow speeders down. I was on Makuu the other day and it didn’t seem terrible to me. Much better than gravel/dirt roads. I do know there is a plan to repave them in the next couple of years and possibly put in stop signs at certain intervals (sooner than repaving). There is a lot of information on
HPPOA.net under the Roads and Executive Tabs.

In Orchidland, being somewhat contrarian, we've called them 'speed holes'. They are frequently found on the older chip seal portions of the main roads ( especially Auli'i ), as well as the unpaved side roads. They slow down cars by making for some interesting zigzag maneuvers.

Road condition on Makuu never bothered me and Iʻve got an old little car. Iʻm not sure how it could be tearing up any vehicles. And I would guess that the "inverted speed bumps" are caused more by large cinder-filled trucks than they are by speeders.
Certainty will be the death of us.

I've often wondered what the point of stop signs in subdivisions is. Most don't obey them on county or state roads, why use them in private subdivisions? There has to be a better way to stop drug-addled drivers from driving out into the main streets without stopping to look. I'm getting older than I care to think about, but at least those people keep my reactions as sharp as ever.

Question, where are they going to get the money to pave the main roads in "the next couple of years?" The cost to pave one road will exceed 4 million, which is more than HPPOA collects in yearly road fees (and is even less, after they transfer $170,000 plus into the general account).
Also, not everyone who blows through stop signs, or runs into stone walls are "drug addled." I really think we need to try to get away from those labels. At least half of the people I have witnessed, who have had those types of accidents varied in age (teens through older) and had fallen asleep (not drug induced) or were distracted (cell phones, talking to car companions, etc.)
And if not stop signs, then what?
