Big Island Organizations & Programs Losing Funding

Kalakoa, your post made me have a revelation about how similar PunaWeb and Hawaii County are.

In fact, I could not say it better than you have over the years. Over and over and over and over.

Over and over and over and over.

Consider talking to your doctor about prescription-strength Ainokea.

Classic response!

But I don't need that drug. You see, because I care. I care about Puna, Hilo, the Big Island, Hawaii and ALL of its people. I care about people going hungry, being fired over political "paybacks" as well as the environment and wildlife more or less tossed into a leaking cesspool. I know, I have empathy towards my fellow human being. Silly me.

But I will say, those that need that drug also have a similar thing in common.

They don't live here. Or they spend 11 months and 2 weeks in Texas and 2 weeks here or 6 months in Ohio and 6 months here. Then there are those who lived here and celebrate (over and over and over and over) their departure from this clear and certain "hell hole."

At any event, I'd love to talk about the impacts of the federal funding cuts to Puna, Hilo, The Big Island and Hawaii.

To borrow from one of HOTPE's prior posts:

"Anyone? anyone? Anyone? anyone?"

"Completed in 1917, the complex originally served as a courthouse, post office and custom house. Other tenants included the Immigration Bureau, Agricultural Extension Service, Weather Bureau and Internal Revenue Service.

The building now serves only as a post office."

All of those other functions have been relocated years ago. Does the Post Office need that large building and don't you think having parking is something a post office might need ?

Do you think the government is just going to abandon the building and walk away from it ?

HPP couldn't take it apart and move it brick by brick because it's reinforced concrete. Can't imagine what kind of condition a reinforced concrete building would be in after 100 pluse years.

Based upon the actions taken in the last 8 weeks, that's exactly what they would do with it. Maybe, since this is Hawaii after all and that whole "Hawaii Time" thing, they may give the remaining employees 20 minutes to pack their stuff and get out instead of the normal 15 minutes.

And then if it is closed, how long will it take for the future Governor of Hawaii to have to issue an emergency demolition order as it's has become a hazardous materials contaminated fire hazard?

Also, how many people are standing in line to buy it to renovate it? And into what? What becomes of the old Hilo Post Office, other than a blight on Hilo, if its ordered closed? And then ultimately demolished. At taxpayer expense of course.

First, it's clear you don't understand sarcasm. Having said that, I have to admit you're right. Yup, when you're right you're right Obie. Afterall, HPP has demonstrated it can't even pave roads and has spent in excess of 8 years pissing around on these mailboxes, which, to be clear, has an outside chance of having to be all ripped out, so expecting the move of a building the size of the old Hilo Post Office is clearly impossible expectation to have!

Maybe something like this could happen to it.

Yes! Again, Obie, when you're right you're right! Got to hand it to you!

But in all honesty, I'd put my money on a Hilo Costco before we would see another fine dining restaurant buy, renovate and open in the old Hilo Post Office.

Now, I would be partial to a Hilo Morton's or Ruth Chris Steak House, or a Legal Seafood, or a Captain Jacks, but that's just me.

I'd be far more partial however, along with a few tens of thousands of my fellow Hilo residents with a Hilo Costco!

How soon we all forget all the Uncle Billy promises...

Not really any of your business (although you try to make everything, your business) but I lived MANY YEARS on the island without ever leaving it, even to visit another island. I have a place in South Florida and Texas now as well as the Hawaii house and spend way more than 2 weeks a year in Hawaii. When I walk into any restaurant in Pahoa or Malama market or Pahoa Auto Parts, BoH, etc., I am greeted by name (and I know Obie is as well). I doubt that could be said of you.

As did I; guess what, it doesn't count.

Good for you. I am sure you know Obie quite well. As well as the other poster who used to take pictures. I am also quite sure that both Texas AND Florida are perfect locations for you.

And then judging by the posts that the three of you typically have made, I doubt there is anyone YOU know that would know ME, my husband or my family and friends.

We don’t associate with people act like juvenile boys and who think women are a lower life form.

At any event, I sure would like to discuss the impacts of the federal funding cuts as it relates to Puna, Hilo, the Big Island and Hawaii, but I guess bragging about who knows who is PunaWeb’s main forte.

Oh, and FYI on the Hilo Post Office. The list of closures of Federal Properties have suddenly “disappeared” from existence, both on the DOGE and GSA websites.

The blowback was too much.
