Seen any good movies lately?
A reminder, Chief of War, the story of Kamehameha starts today on Apple TV.
Some scenes were filmed at the Kaimu Market.  It’s getting excellent reviews.

Apple TV has a number of great shows, The Studio starring Seth Rogen about the movie business.  Murderbot my favorite new program, in which a Security Bot hacks the module which prevents self awareness and self action, and then proceeds to do what many people would choose to do with their freedom of choice, for good and for perhaps less than optimal use of their time.

If you’re a fan of the original Star Trek TV series, you might enjoy this 30 minute documentary about the effort which went into bringing it back to life in the mid ‘70’s.  It came so close, perhaps if Scotty had just banged on the dilithium crystals with a bigger wrench.

As Spock might have reviewed these interviews, sketches, and unfinished sets, “fascinating.”

I saw it and itʻs great! It first played at the Hawaii Intʻl Film Festival, then as a sneak at the Palace several months ago. I saw it twice, which I rarely do. Wonderful script. Many seemingly throwaways that are not throwaways at all. Defies stereotypes and beautifully acted and directed. And all filmed in and around Hilo.
Certainty will be the death of us.

Red Heaven
On Roku Channel
One year in the life of participants in a HI-SEAS Mars simulation on Mauna Loa.  Probably a lot like a year in the life of a Puna resident.  What to eat?  Fill out too many forms and questionnaires.  Everything is always on hold for 40 minutes.  Water pump clogged, seriously clogged.

I found it intriguing.  Side note: When you drive Saddle Road returning from Kona side, a few miles before you reach Mauna Kea Road, you can still see the white dot of their dome in the far distance.  It stands out in the lava fields on Mauna Loa.

Gerard O’Neill’s vision for space colonies.  I first read about his ideas in a 1980’s issue of Coevolution Quarterly.  He’s an environmentalist, so he didn’t want to abandon earth, but create a better earth by accessing abundant sources of building materials, water, air - - from the moon and asteroids.  The goal?  If we have enough for everyone, there would be no reason for war.  Even greedy people could get far too much of what they need want right here in the solar system.  The space colonies he imagined were huge, with populations of 10,000 people.  Like HPP in orbit, without the roosters.  Or membership meetings.

Not a movie, but I have seen some good Gary Larson Far Side cartoons recently.  He’s come out of retirement, put down that jazz guitar and started drawing again:

I don’t know if this movie is any good, but it is a Hawaii production. It’s a surf/horror/comedy.

Following a sold-out theatrical premiere and successful screenings across the islands, the 100% locally made Hawaii surf horror comedy “Plankenstein: A Killer Surf Movie!” will screen at the Palace Theater in Hilo at 7 p.m. (Dec 4, 2025) on Thursday.

Also streaming as a rental on Amazon, etc.

I just discovered it's available to rent on Amazon streaming now.

Ever get to the point when you think there really aren't any good movies anymore? Hollywood makes so-called blockbuster films, but IMO, all the recent ones make you cringe. So I looked up what's in store for 2026.

The first movie looks interesting, I might watch it - "Shelter". It has a couple of good actors and might be based on real events, but I'm not certain. Then there's "Crime 101", it looks OK at first glance - there's a story there. Probably worth watching as a movie on a long flight.

The others don't look great. I don't particularly like horror movies and just roll my eyes at cryptid movies. Hopefully, there will be some other offerings soon, probably not from Hollywood.

On Netflix there’s The Door Into Summer.  Written by Robert Heinlein way back when, made into a recent movie in Japan.  It’s a sci-fi, time travel love story.  Low budget, but the script connects all the dots without resorting to suspension of disbelief or a leap of faith like dilithium crystals juiced to 110%.
