Seen any good movies lately?
Looks like they just wrapped filming season 2 which should be released on Netflix later in 2026, although it's only 6 episodes long instead of 8 like season 1. They're also filming season 3 immediately, but it might only be 5 episodes long, which is concerning as the books get longer and more complicated throughout the Remembrance of Earth's Past series.

Might need to check out the books if you want the full story - looks like little to no wait on the first couple books/ebooks/audiobooks at the library - newer have a bit more of a wait.

While a re-watch for me, but tonight my grandson and his 2 best buds and Barney, we watched "Hidden Figures," the true story about three female African-American mathematicians who all play a pivotal role in astronaut John Glenn's launch into orbit in February 1962. It brought 3 teen boys to tears. Me too actually. Available on most streaming services.

Starring Kevin Costner, Jim Parsons, Glen Powell, Kirsten Dunst, Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe. Soundtrack by Pharrell Williams.

So a newly reconstituted Kronos Quartet (famous in part for their contributions to movie soundtracks for Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, Heat, and the always intense Requiem for a Dream) went all ham on the creativity in their second Tiny Desk concert today with a rendition of Neil Young's "Ohio" (Reminder - less than a week till the March 28th protest in Hilo), and composition by Nicole Lizée which included whirly tubes and foot bells, a Billie Holiday standard, and an Indonesian composition about rain, featuring some croaking frogs (when life gives you choke rain and coqui frogs, make music?). Good stuff!

Thanks for posting the Kronos Quartet video ironyak!
Always loved their wide ranging repertoire and eclectic choice of songs.
As a boomer who grew up in a small town of 12,000, 30 miles from an Air Force base which regularly sent supersonic fighters overhead rattling windows and occasionally breaking them, even though there was a parallel path nearby over an unpopulated body of water so large it was designated “Great”, now where was I going, oh yes!  As a boomer I’m glad to see Kronos carry on with a new generation of players up to the task, as good as ever, and in the spirit of the original group.

I would be happy to see this practice applied elsewhere.

The movie Creator was just added to Netflix.
Plot:
AI has divided the world.
Some nations have banned it, some have accepted humanoid AI robots as partners and equals.
Of course, war follows

Directed by Alex Garland, who made Ex Machina, Annihilation, Civil War, etc, etc…

Over on the Upgrade & Scam thread there’s been discussion about modern day methods to frighten people out of their money.  Here’s a couple of movies based on old school techniques:

The Spanish Prisoner - Steve Martin in a dramatic role, reworking a scam from the Middle Ages

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - Steve Martin & Michael Caine working over the rich, the lonely, and greedy along Europe’s Mediterranean coast.

Excellent suggestions HOTPE!

Another one to add on the discussion about modern day methods to frighten people out of their money, may I suggest "The Beekeeper," a 2024 fictional action-thriller written by Kurt Wimmer. The film is inspired by real-world issues, specifically the prevalence of online phishing scams and tech-support fraud targeting vulnerable individuals.

Starring the venerable Jason Statham, portraying in what one could say was a born for role, with lots and lots and I mean lots of good old-fashioned brutality in his one-man campaign for righteous vengeance.

Streaming on all the regular platforms that for some is OK to watch, but not others.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a true classic, one of my favorites! If you're a fan, you'll get a kick out of this preview for 1964's Bedtime Story: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057878/

The Beekeeper is intense, but definitely a good prophylactic movie for anyone in your family that might be susceptible to phone scams. (As long as they can tolerate an insane amount of death and destruction!) They certainly won't forget it!

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is one of my favorite movies. I used to love Steve Martin movies until he did the Pink Panther remakes - IMO that was a mistake. There's no replacing Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau, and I was shocked when he took on the role.

Tonight on PBS is the first installment of a three part series on Henry David Thoreau.  A lot of people you’re sure to recognize are involved with the project.  Take a step back in time.

The film draws on a rich collection of archival materials, newly filmed cinematography in Concord and beyond, and interviews with scholars, writers, and environmentalists. Among the people featured in the film are Pico Ayer, Douglas Brinkley, Lois Brown, Kristen Case, Laura Dassow Walls, Clay Jenkinson, Robin Kimmerer, J. Drew Lanham, Bill McKibben, Michael Pollan, Rebecca Solnit, and more.

HENRY DAVID THOREAU is narrated by George Clooney and voices are provided by Ted Danson (Ralph Waldo Emerson), Tate Donovan (William Ellery Channing), Jeff Goldblum (Henry David Thoreau), and Meryl Streep (Lidian Emerson, Margaret Fuller, Mary Merrick Brooks, and Maria Thoreau).

“Thoreau’s insistence that conscience must guide citizenship, and that solitude can be a source of strength, continues to speak directly to our time,” said executive producer Ken Burns. “He challenged Americans to ask hard questions about who we are and what kind of society we want to build, a challenge that remains as urgent today as it was in his day. But perhaps most importantly he asked us to stop and to pay attention to the world around us.”

Executive producer Don Henley, founding member and lead singer of the Eagles

Thanks for the heads up Edge! Somehow this had skipped past my radar (shows what the algorithms know), but only caught the first part for now, so no spoilers ;)

PSA - it looks like all three parts are available free to stream for about the next month, even without a cable provider or PBS Passport.

As a quick aside Edge, did you catch yesterday's Trails to Oishii Tokyo - Turnip episode? Any experience or luck growing such sweet turnips here? We tend to grow jicama as, like purple potatoes, it can take a beeting (can't skip the obvious pun ;) but those kirei turnips looked tempting, and only 60 days to harvest, so hoping you or someone else might have had some local success with them.
