Have you bought any gas lately?
#61
booked some travel off island

The airlines are already raising prices.  I booked a month or so ago, and a week later fares were higher.  United just added $10 to checked bag fees.  Airlines that practice fuel hedging, buying at futures prices helps them average costs.  Airlines that buy at market prices are more exposed to rapid fluctuations in fuel prices.  Everything already costs more, and prices are going higher.  Fuel prices affect transportation, food and goods production, power, everything.

Remember that simpler time when people voted based on the intolerable cost of a single item at the grocery store?  When news outlets hypnotized viewers with the endless chant of eggs eggs eggs?

If this sticks around, it will likely lead to another round of inflation like 2022-2023 if not worse. I'm seriously going through my off-grid life right now thinking of everything I might need over the next few years. Spare parts, consumables that store well long-term, etc...

Gas is just the most obvious problem. A substantial amount of the world's fertilizer and plastic feedstock also transits the Strait of Hormuz. Also helium, which is necessary for chip fabs and MRI scanners.

USPS will soon add a fuel surcharge. Amazon Marketplace too.

Gas is almost $4/gallon here.

Starting April 17, 2026, Amazon is introducing a temporary 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge for U.S. and Canada third-party sellers using Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA). This fee, designed to offset rising transportation costs, applies specifically to fulfillment fees (averaging $\sim$$0.17 per unit) rather than the total item price...

yawn.

Didn’t you comment that contributing 8 cents per $100 toward SNAP groceries was somehow a burden?
But 17 cents on a $10.00 item for a billionaire only warrants a yawn?

Energy prices in Hawaii are up about $100 a month per household.
Plane fares to and from the islands are up 25%.
Inflation is projected to be higher until 2028.

Almost all caused by tariffs, war, and policies favorable to the ultra wealthy.

If you think housing and the cost of living is too high in Hawaii, how do you justify policy that makes it even more expensive?  If you blame one party for high costs, why vote for another party that make prices go up up up?

If you’re worried about gas prices, still to come are motor oil increases and empty shelves.  It’s on the way as 10w40 works its way out of supply chain shipments.

Every country in the world is seeing up to 30% increases in EV car purchases this year since they don’t require gas or oil.  Every country except one due to our anachronistic, regressive, and repressive energy policies.

You can get a really nice Chinese EV for $20K. Just not in America; they're banned to protect the domestic EV industry, even though most domestic manufacturers are turning away from EVs.

When the asking price for jacked up Toyota 4x4 gas hogs starts to come down on the used market locally then you will know the cost of gas has become widely burdensome on da Big Island.

As for the Chinese EV's, so much for our "Trumped up" free market. Meanwhile those evil, socialist countries in Europe allow them FS.
