Marking your name in big bold letters is good, wrapping it in duct tape so it looks broken is also a good thief deterrent. A friend of mine sprays all of his tools with either yellow or white spray paint.
Either leaving someone on site to watch things or picking up the tools when leaving the site may be a wise thing to do, especially in an area known to have these sorts of things happening.
We had some one breaking into houses in our neighborhood because of ice. They finally caught the guy and the whole neighborhood went in to testify at his hearing about how their lives were disrupted and upset by his activities. He got 128 consecutive years with no parole. Work with your police to catch the guy and nail the burgler to the wall as an exhibit for others.

I've found spray painting things with different colors to make them look really ugly and unique is a pretty good deterrent. Who want a drill that has orange, blue, white and red stripes all over it? Try turning THAT back into HD for a refund.

Many years ago I had a girl friend that owned a small ranch. She painted all her tool hot pink to keep the hired help from taking them home at the end of the day. She said she had one worker that refused to use them because they were pink!

Royall is right, hot pink is the answer.
I worked with a general contractor at a coast guard station in Seattle for about five years and he painted EVERYTHING pink. And I mean EVERYTHING, ever see a pink wheelbarrow before? He never lost a single tool............ I'm hooked.

Hey you guys are taking my color!!! ha ha I paint my "holly hobby" home tools pink so my stuff doesnt go out the door with my SO's tools!

I had my motorcycle painted hot pink, it was great. My friend's paint shop had just done some of the Polynesian Adventure busses and they had some of that hot pink color left over, just enough to do my motorcycle. The harley guys would come borrow my small hot pink Suzuki GS450 to take their road tests on for their driver's licenses. Heheheh!
So does this mean I should repaint my red roll around tool box? How about hot pink with purple flames? Hot pink tools are also easier to spot when left laying around.

RE; Thieves. There has been a recent theft of building supplies, (enough concrete siding for a house) stolen from Unit#1 Leilani Estates, corner Hapuu & Malama Sts. also there have been multiple reports/sightings of disoriented acting/ iced or drunken teens roaming the area, trying locked doors, jumping gates. Today my neighbor said they were scanning my place, and apparently vandalized another neighbors yard, ripped up, broke off his newly planted expensive orange vireya, just out of plain meanness.

Question for you long-time Puna residents.
Is the theft problem getting better? Worse? Has it been steady over the years?

Until this incident my neighborhood always seemed pretty secure for the last 8 years, but since my last post there have been 2 more property thefts on our road, the suspects were caught red handed last time, but escaped- 4 teen boys, 1 haole & 3 locals in an old blue Isuzu Trooper. I still think it's better than it was. There is much more police presence now in Puna than when I lived here in the 80's. I was broken into twice in 9 months then, police didn't show 'til the next day the first time and I didn't even bother calling them the second time. At least this time 2 patrol cars were here in about 20 mins.

Hey Mark, if you need to borrow until you get some stuff replaced, just give me a call. You didn't specify which tools got ripped, but you pretty much know what I've got. (I don't normally loan (or borrow) tools, but you are the exception)).
