Sunoven??
#1
Just found this interesting oven. I love the concept of cooking outdoors. Has anyone tried one of these contraptions? I was wondering if it would be feasible for an outdoor kitchen? Perhaps one could make their very own design. Just ideas!
Aloha,
Mella

Mella, we used the SunOven at the Solar Institute (before coming here). It worked pretty nicely up above SF, CA. They were just testing out this Hybrid model, which looked like it had a lot to offer for around Puna:

and for the $50 more, it does look more versatile...
Real Goods (Gaiam) is a good resource, but I would always recommend to check if there are any local dealers (for service? & support)
Hey, how are those ferocious wild cats?

Hey Carey thanks mucho, from your bicoastal friend Mella!!

The cat situation is very unnerving. We received a phone call in March telling us that the kittie permit and legalization would be discussed end of April or beginning of May and we were requested to be at the meeting! Just yesterday we were told that once again it is delayed as to coincide the meeting with the 15 or so board members necessary is a daunting task and hopefully the end of June is the next projection date. Our permit has been on file for 10 months now. Gosh I'd hate to be a business trying to go thru this process. Perhaps that is why there is no Whole Earth Foods, Trader Joe's or Costco is so limited! Tough going, frustrating and downright had me bouncing off the walls for a few months until I put it in the hands of the universal powers that be, oh and a senator!

Meanwhile the housing market here in No. Cal. is dumping like a Puna rain! Our accepted and paid for building permit is now out of date and soon the kitty blood tests will be out of date. But no fear we still have our travel trailer and may just skip the house building and live in a trailer with an outdoor large Lanai for entertaining and gardening. Who knows!! LOL

I am so looking forward to diving with you all, am so jealous but desire to read every word of the Punatic parties and the Diving outings! Can;t wait to get gardening and have found some awesome recipes for all things Hawaiian.

Cheers Carey, see you one day. When we have a date the Punatics will be the very first to know! Aloha, Mella

PS Do you think it would be water proof for from the rain if I set it up and then went to town?

The oven or the cats? Our cat seems to be OK left out in the rain (the thing likes to stay out in light rains! obviously born in Puna)
The Solar Oven doesn't have a watertight seal, but the glass is at an angle...a Puna downpour would probably let some water in (Do not know about the Hybrid, only got a peek at a demo model...)
We have found the sun angle is just enough that the roof overhang can protect most things from rain but still allow the sun to hit...mainly Kitty litter solar drying & disinfect, so not real critical stuff.

Aloha Mella and Carey! So good to hear your words on Punaweb...I know you're plugging away trying to get your babies here.

The solar oven caught my eye 'cause I remember seeing something on PBS a few years ago about a whole park full of people that get together every year and have a solar cook-off! I mean, roasts, chili - you name it, they were doing it - and they were just ovens they made by hand - it was part of the criteria to be in the cook-off I guess...

When are you coming home next Mella? I have a pretty yellow hat for ya! LOL!
