Paklan tree reproduction?
#1
hi, I have a nice paklan (michelia champaca) I would like to take to my new house via cutting ... but I wonder if it needs to be airlayered.

Any experience? by the way, I bought this tree for maybe $79 not quite two years ago and it has turned into a true shade tree already and a dense screen. I planted it for the fragrance and didn't expect the bonus of a really nice year tree that has been much more pest free than the bauhinia I planted at the same time.

Hi Kathy,

I don't have any experience but I googled Thai website at http://www.doae.go.th/library/html/detai...champ4.htm
According to their info, it's easy to propogate from seeds rather than airlayer.

Do you get many seeds from your tree? If you do, can you spare a couple. I will pay. I have been looking for the young plants at different nurseries in town but no luck so far.

Thanks,
Val

Hi Iju,
thanks for searching ...
sadly, I have never seen it make a seed...

They carry Paklan Garden Exchange, Paradise Plants and Walmart, but I have never seen it under 5 gal size.

I wonder if I stuck a cutting in Dip n Grow if it would take.

It did said that it takes very long time to root with airlayer.
But I think you should try it, the stem cuttings.
Last November, I saw a 5-gal Michelia alba at Garden Exchange but didn't buy it. I will check those nurseries again. Thanks.

hi kathy,

i have a friend who grew one in mountain view (calif) and tried to air layer a few branches but was not sucessful....but out of a five gallon container had alot of blooms in under a year so he got all the right conditions to get it going....sadley it died with the last frost this past winter....i was going to ask him to try another graft for me to have potted.

the blooms are pretty fantastic....
