Robguz,
Are you part of the volcano observation crew, to "get to" stand in Pu`u `O`o vent?
Curious,

Some of my Geology classmates took an intensive summer course in volcanoes. Their emails sound like this was the summer to take that course! (I, of course took it last summer.... lot of great hikes, but really nothing new... They may get a whole new eruption site!!!)

I can answer part of this for Rob. He posted a URL to his photos from his hike to the Pu'u O'o vent area.

The park is now closing Kalapana side entry and trying to enforce it. Trying, not necessarily succeeding.
Exciting times.

Thanks for the updates guys. Yes this is fascinating, to see geology in action. Very cool stuff. I check into the Lo'ihi site upon occasion to see what is happening there. Here it is for those interested an undersea mount, but the page hasn't been updated for 1 1/2 years.

So, is this new volcanic activity going to create some flows that have closer access ? I'll be on island again in a month, and would like to go see the flow, but not have to hike 3 hours to get to it.
Does anyone know ?

There was a new breakout & flow uprift from the past Pu'u 'O'o flow, this new breakout flow stopped yesterday morning, it was near Makaopuhi Crater. This was the crater that you walked around for the Pu'u 'O'o overlook trail just down from the Hilina Pali turnoff on Chain of Craters (off of the parking for the Alo'i Crater). This is above where Chain of Craters makes a zig to the east, with lookouts on the now - old Pu'u 'O'o flow (the campout flow was the only flow visible yesterday from Pu'u 'O'o, and it was thought that this was just a draining of the lava that was left in the tube)

If you look at the Episode 56 (name reminds me of "Area 51"
map the orange/brown line is not the trail. Its an elevation line. The trail is in very faint blue.

No, just happened to meet someone at the beach a couple days before he led a group of us up the cone. Glad I did it when I had the chance, because it may be a long while before this can happen again, if ever.

The 2nd episode map with seismicity is pretty impressive!
