Looking for coconut starts...
#1
Does anyone have young coconut starts they might be throwing away, they usually have these at the dump but haven't seen any lately.

I would gladly take these off your hands and plant them in an area that needs more greenery and visual interest.

Mahalo in advance,

Noel

I have a lot in Kapoho that has a number of young coconuts on it (at least there were the last time I was physically on the property). You're welcome to some. Email me for info on where the lot is.

Pam,

Cat knows my Kapoho lots (Cat, the one on Kahi Loli has more coconuts than Kahi Koa). Any that Noel doesn't take, you are more than welcome to have. Just don't take the adult ones (the lot is in a conservation zone, so I have to get state approval to remove adult trees).

I've been researching coconuts to plant at home and found some interesting information on the following site. Check out the notes on the Samoan and also the Select Tall. Being able to get up to half a gallon of refreshment from a coconut sounds appealing.

It might be nice to add 1 or 2 of these in your coconut plantings for some choice nuts.

Gaia Yoga has a nursery in Kapoho and I plan to visit one of these days.

If you still need coconuts, let me know. We always have loads of them in the back yard sprouting up in the bamboo. Email hotzcatz at yahoo dot com and we can work out details. We are halfway up the Hamakua Coast, though, so Kapoho coconuts might be closer. These are from the really tall coconut trees, too.

It is my understanding that a fungus has been hitting some of the coconuts on the islands.

What are the experts over there saying about whether any varieties are disease resistant?

We may fly out in November to get some foundational trees in the ground on our lot and putting in some coconuts now seems to make sense given the 7 year wait for fruit.

Also, is there any place that sells the babies at a reasonable price?

Edit: In case it matters, we are "on the sunny side" of HPP...3rd Avenue.
