When we were at the Keaau zoo we saw and fell in love with the sealing wax palm trees that line one of their walk ways near the main entrance.
Has anyone had luck growing these at home? If so, do you think they would do well in the sunny, drier part of HPP?

We have 3 growing at home here in Hilo. They are very slow growing and love moisture. I've seen them around in HPP so it should thrive in your area provided you address the moisture requirements.

I also am fascinated by them. There are many in my area of Hawaiian Shores.

they are extremely beautiful along with extremely pricey....if anyone knows where to find affordable palms like this - that would be a great tip to us palm fanatics.

i have seen small ones at garden exchange for 25$. she doesnt get them in often, but you can order them. i also have seen them for same price at sunday farmers market.. a bit bigger.... one woman bought them all the very minute they came off the truck (sigh!)

With a good supply of water they should do fine in HPP.
If your wondering how slow they grow...
These were planted 6 years ago and were about 16 inches tall at the time.

I believe we paid 60$ per plant from Kapoho Palms.

We purchased our specimens from Kapoho Kai Nursery. Jan specializes in palms and has a sale for the public once a year. If you establish an account with her, you can visit throughout the year by appointment.
I've seen road signs in HPP for a palm nursery in HPP (I think it is on 6th st).
They are great looking palms but you'll need a lot of patience as they are slow (or a lot of $$$ for large specimens).

Most palms will readily sprout from fresh seeds so if you see some seeds on the ground under a sealing wax palm, you could try sprouting them.
