Nanawale Question
#1
Does anyone know anything about the area around Mayzee Rd. in Nanawale Estates? We're looking at a home to buy on that street and just thought we could use some feedback on the subject.

"How do you know i am mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the cat "or you wouldnt have come here."

Could I add another question? How is mail delivered to Nanawale residents? I thought I saw mailboxes across from the common area (where the pool is) but do those cover everyone? I didn't see Mayzee Rd. when I was "cruising" but I bought a house close to the entrance, so I didn't see the whole sub.

Last time I checked, there was a waiting list for mailboxes at the Nanawale longhouse. Lots of people either get a box in Hilo, Keaau or Pahoa or use one of the commercial services.

BTW, Aloha, Roze!

Have you driven around the sub? I checked on Mapquest today and found out Mayzee Rd. was close to the beginning of the sub, so you may have county water there. Its only 5 blocks long, on the west side of the sub's "main drag", Nanawale St itself. I did drive on it, just didn't know its name. I don't think I saw many homes on it, mostly uncleared lots. The Where to Move page says there is a neighberhood watch.
John, you're right about the waiting list. I'd hoped that an older home may come with its existing mailbox, but apparently, each tenant/owner must start afresh? I wanted to send some stuff over and pick it up when I fly in (in Aug) but they claim I need to apply in person to even get a PO box! So I fly with my sleeping bag and cooler? (It'll take 2 days to get the power turned on - so I buy ice, too, and a grill?) Arrgh!

Do I understand this correctly that you cannot receive mail at Nanawale without a box and that there are no boxes available??????? How is this possible? I am also assuming the postal carrier will not deliver to your door if you put a mailbox outside of it? Boy what you take for granted on the mainland!

I've lived in Nanawale since 1979 and have been attending board meetings religiously since I retired last fall with the aim of volunteering in my community.

FedEx and UPS both deliver to Nanawale. As for USPS, not only is there a long waiting list for post office boxes in Nanawale, but no more are going to be built, according to the current board of directors.

The only direct USPS mail delivery in Nanawale beyond the boxes located outside the community assoc. bldg. is for those lots located directly on Nanawale Blvd. The post office sent us info about 8 or 10 years ago inviting those of us on Nanawale Blvd. to put up our own mailboxes. I have always maintained a P.O. box at the Pahoa post office because I didn't want to "lose" my mail. I consider it a worthwhile investment, especially lately as a lot of mail gets stolen. The delivery person for Nanawale was recently convicted of stealing mail, and he gets to come back to his job in 6 months!

Re: the county water lines only go down Nanawale Blvd. and there is a moritorium on putting in more water lines. I don't know why. Most people in Nanawale are on water catchment. We do get lots of rain so it's seldom a problem. Hope this helps.

Morganlady, you can send things through "General Delivery" to the post office, without a mailbox. Just address the packages to "Your Name, General Delivery, Pahoa (or Keaau or Hilo or where ever you want to receive the mail) HI 96778 (Keaau - 96749, Hilo - 96720, Mountain View - 96771, Kurtistown - 96760, Volcano - 96785).
Your package will be at the front desk, just ask if they have any "general Delivery" mail for you when you go in. Parcel Post packages take about 4-6 weeks usually from the mainland, Priority 2-5 days.

Mail in Nanawale is delivered along Nanawale Blvd. as far as the community mail box; outside the Longhouse. There is a waiting list; I believe about 25 people. The current fee is refundable $50; set by the USPS. Liz at the Longhouse has a list, that you can put your name on(if you are a resident of Nanawale). When your name comes up you can pay the fee, and get a key and box;if and when you leave Nanawale you have to turn in the key to get your refund.

Gary, how long have you been in Nanawale? Good luck on the 18th. I hope the residents turn out. Wish I was there! Soon...
