I was walking through my yard today, touching and smelling my lavender which grows beautifully in Southern California. I though to myself -- "I will miss you lavender, but other wonderful flowers will take your place". I doubt lavender would grow in Puna because it seems to like a litle neglect (I supply that in spades), lots of sun, and not so much rain. When I overwater it, it lets me know quickly.
I understand tomatoes don't fare that well in Puna. They don't really do that well here in close to the coast in Southern California either. You need to go a little inland where they have more heat. What have you tried to grow which did not seem to "cotton" to Puna?

Bell peppers, eggplant, squash, beans, they don't like so much rain, so many bugs. And corn, great plants, no ears.

Aloha, Glen. I had the same experience as Leilaniguy with corn, but have had good luck with beans and eggplant here in central HPP. Some types of squash do OK, but some don't. We have had very good luck with a vining Japanese squash we bought at Garden Exchange in Hilo. We don't like bell peppers, so have not tried them, but hot peppers thrive here.

Does anyone know where the corn comes from that is sometimes sold from the truck on Kilauea next to the general store? Do they ship it in from Molokai?

It comes from a large farm up the Hamakua Coast (or at least it used to -- there was a story in the paper about those people and their farm a few years ago).

We bought some last year and it was quite good. I wonder if they have to hand-polinate to avoid rain washing the polin off.

I managed to grow corn up here in Mountain View, the ears were small but tasty. I think if I had dug the soil deeper they would have grown bigger. I have not had any luck growing bell peppers or cucumbers. Aloha, Angela

That's the Loeffler folks who grow the sweet corn and it's really good stuff! They have several different fields they grow it in and they plant several different varieties of seed from what I've heard. Try ask when you go get some, they will probably know exactly where that day's corn was grown. I think they get up and pick corn in the morning to be sold later that day from the trucks.
If you plant your lavender in a dry spot, Glen, you may be able to keep growing it. I can keep it growing in containers on the porch where I can control the amount of water it gets but lately a hen, Buffy, has taken to roosting in it at night so the lavender is suffering. Doesn't seem to make lavender flavored eggs, either. Rosemary, which seems like some sort of close relative to lavender, grows really well here. Lavender grows really well up in Waimea and I would also suspect it grows well up past Glenwood, too, but I don't know that for sure.
There are several varieties of apples which can be grown in Hawaii. There are also several varieties of peaches which can be grown in Hawaii. I have "Florida Prince" and "Ana's Pride" planted. The FP does well however the AP is still too new to tell.

They are a wholesale nursery, but there are links on their page to folks they sell to and some of those folks will ship plants retail to Hawaii.

I have the Dorsett Golden Apple up here in Mountain View, it's still young but growing happily, got it from Paradise Plants and also a Florida Prince Peach. I have a couple kinds of lavendar that are growing vigorously and flowering lately with all the sun. I planted them in raised beds with a little soil, but mostly cinder, they don't like to get water logged. I've also had good luck with long beans. I just started some sweet peas and soybeans, so I'll let you know how they turn out. It sure is beautiful up here today!  Angela
