Has anyone tried to go through the airpoport with one of these stoves lately. We hit one of the crack downs when we were coming back from Australia in Feb. & had to leave the stove behind. (it had had flammable liquids & could not be mailed either) For someone coming over for a couple of weeks, canned heat (sterno type) or the burner that screws onto a propane cylinder might make the most $ense. ( the stove top should be able to be packed, and is USUALLY available at any of the MARTs, as with the propane fuel - haven't noticed sterno here - but they can be out of stock when you arrive...) Another popular thing here is the butane stove top & butane cans...have seen this at many of the retail shops.

Can't say that I have tried to get on an airplane with my stove since 9/11 but I would think it would be ok if you completely empty the tank. Once emptied you can even pack it. You have to remember to blow out the generator tube or a inspector might smell the residual fuel. Leave it in the sun for a few minutes to let all the residual evaporate. I can refuel anywhere unleaded gasoline is sold.

I plan to buy a cooking unit once I get on the Island.
I'd imagine that the stove part of a Coleman unit could travel with you, but the tank probably is what they'd fear on board an airliner. Once that's unscrewed, the rest of the unit should pass (in the baggage compartment). I wouldn't even try to take Sterno or bottled fuel of any kind with me - I want to fly not sit in the office at the airport all day. (Last time they took my Avon Skin So Soft away, I had to buy mosquito repellant for $11 in HNL - pout)

Some nice about a campfire... in fact we plan to build a permanent fire pit somewhere in front of the house - but not before the house is done LOL.
As for cooking - consider those butane burners. They are available at Cost U Less as well as the cans of fuel. They work pretty good, one of those is our primary "stove" along with the microwave and grill.

CostULess in in Hilo on Kinoole St.(next door to the bowling alley). I have also seen the butane stove at quite a few of the grocery stores & such. The are very popular here, and usually have a nice travel box.

Aloha everyone,
Thanks for these tips. I greatly appreciate them.
I googled the one burner Coleman and I think it's cool and that is what I will get, or maybe two, they're small.
I have a two burner one. If it fits in my luggage along with all my other stuff, like sleeping bags, air matresses, and my solar lights, and whatever else I think of, I'll bring it.
I did forget about the refrigeration. That's another problem I'll have to deal with. Another thing I'd like to ask? Someone mentioned about being able to get fresh water along the road. Where is this located?
This is so neat reading about all these things that I don't even think to ask about. Like those mysterious bugs!
I will certainly be on the lookout for them and think before I do anything while I am there.
I wanted to mention that the land that I bought has a few cabins. One has a bathroom and another one I don't know what the inside is like.
There is also a greenhouse. It is plastic covered, but by now it may have come off.
I have no clue what to expect when I get there.
I am thinking I will bring my whisk broom and stay in the one cabin and I figure if someone was living there back in May, it can't be as bad as staying in a tent. I will probably have to fight my way through high grass and weeds to get to it.
I am getting so excited!!! I am collecting any and all ideas you guys may have to make this vacation comfy without spending a fortune for housing. I didn't want to be so far away from the land and have to drive everyday back and forth from a rental.

PS Is there any wifi spots in Hilo?

Last time I was there I used Lola’s Boutique and Café. No charge for the fast wireless but it's a restaurant and I expect it would be rude to not buy lunch. The book store at the mall has wireless too but you have to pay for it and it doesn't include lunch.

There is a story behind my decision to use the Coleman Feather as an example. My onetime lady hiking partner saw my MSR stove and freaked thinking it was too complicated to set up. Between trips she bought a 442 and insisted we use it next trip - we did and we were both happy with the performance. I would almost swear she was even smug about it. If you need to describe it, a 1 lb. can of coffee is about the same size and weight. It fact you could probably disguise it in a coffee can if the needs arises.
One option for cooling is those thermoelectric coolers for use in car trips like this example:
http://www.compactappliance.com/xq/JSP.d...roduct.htm
Instead of running the car all the time, you could consider solar. Regular panels able to supply enough power are bulky but here are roll up solar panels like these:
http://store.altenergystore.com/Solar-El...nels/c679/
The cooler requires 36W according to the specs so you would need to get 40W of panels which gets expensive. These are portable you can take them where ever and should last at least 10 yrs. Just remember THIEVES will find them just as portable.

Wi Fi Our house has one....I have heard some of our neighbors complain when hubby is doing stuff to it (downtown Keaau) Also Kobe Cafe has internet (don't know if there is a cost) both in Hilo & in Keaau
Jean:
Water refills are along both 130 (at the Keaau Transfer & as you near Pahoa) & going up Hwy 11.
The condition of your cabin depends on the people living there... it can be amazing... might want to de bug the place
You can use a biggish cooler as one of your check ons, that way you can purchase ice for to keep things cool....
The cabin with a bath, is there running water (and a power source - if on the grid is the power connected?)
You may be able to get a rather inexpensive broom here (Ace has had them on sale for only a couple of dollars & there is a Dollar Plus store - not much is a dollar- in the mall in Hilo, right by the bus stop & McD's.)
