Insurance Close to the Water
#11
Kathy, we are on twin timing tracks. What scares me down by the water is not the rust and salt --it's the insurance....yikes! Although I have to say, the stories about what CAN rust, corrode, disintegrate are pretty sobering.

Anyway, good luck to you, too.

glen,
the house I was looking at already had a lot of rust and salt damage after 15 years. It was built from standard materials that could not stand up to the assault.

Right now I'm in a short term in Vacationland -- oceanfront although across the street -- and everything is rusted and corroded: roof eaves, appliances, lamps, fixtures, windows, screen doors are falling out.

It's just way too much maintenance. I would not use aluminum windows for sure.

Anyhow, there was way too much stuff for me to replace considering it was in the low 400's to start with.

But I really liked the location and the drama of the sea!

I did also have tsunami concerns there ... I mean, if there had been one, it wouldn't have been so good. It was a one story and the regular ocean waves breaking were at eye level out across the back yard ...

Please forgive me for going to the Punaweb Well of Wisdom with such frequence lately. I am in our debt. Do any of you have any experience with getting insurance within close proximity to the lovely blue --but treacherous-- ocean? Agents? Companies that service that area? The agent I went through expressed difficulty, especially where the dwelling was within 500 feet of the water.

Really, just thinking that thatched huts may be a more practical idea than a stick and mortar house!

For what it's worth Glen. With Pyramid Insurance you may pay a little more than others out there. But when the '"Mud" hits the fan', Pyramid is right there! Kevin Yee is also my agent. Kevin & Pyramid pay out their claims really fast making their service worth the extra $$$. It allows me not to lose sleep , which is important to me..
