best bait and trap for mongoose.
#1
This morning about 6:30Am, 7 of my ducklings were killed by mongooses. It was so sad . Yesterday, they were very happy. Today, they are gone. I like to keep the ducks free range, but I have to keep those ducklings in a cage separate from the mom. Can the mom be safe from the mongoose? Can can she defends herself? What is the best bait and trap for mongoose, and who sell it? Help!!!!
thanks

So sorry to hear about that[V] I had the same problem with my chickens. You can get a trap from Dels. Small animal trap will work. I had a mongoose kill two of my chicks and steel eggs. I only saw one mongoose. I borrowed a trap from a friend and put an egg in it. We caught ten mongoose in one day. One even saw his buddy trapped came back and tried to get the egg. We even were able to re-use the egg several times. I heard of people putting in meat but I had an abundance of eggs. After we caught them we put the cage in a tub filled with water. I hated to kill them but they have no predators here and multiply like crazy. I haven't had any mongoose problems since. We have a dog now that likes to chase them. So that helps keep them away too. They should be okay when they are too big for the mongoose to try and eat them. three months old or about the size of a football.

Thanks jade,
Do you know remember what kind of trap were you using(brand name, or description), and where to get it? Were the egg you used as bait is cooked)?
thanks

we caught plenty mangoose (mongeese?) in the cat trap when we were catching feral cats. used dry cat food as bait - mangoose like it too.

Kitty also caught a mangoose yesterday. sounded awful as she tangled with it. But she reigned as the victor and not a bite on her. Wouldnt recommend this method! We thought all hell was breaking loose from the mangoose screeching.

Our dogs chase a lot more mongoose than they catch but one of our dogs occasionally manages to catch one. We have a small "Haveaheart" trap which we bait with a raw egg like Jade mentioned and that seems to be much more effective than letting the dogs do it.

I know how you feel, Canle. I had seven half grown chickens killed once because they were in a cage and the mongoose got in and the chickens weren't able to run away. It was very sad. Ducklings aren't as fast as chickens but if they had a pond with an island in the middle of it they'd be safe from mongoose wouldn't they? All you'd need is a pond with an island.

We keep our chicken coop up off the ground so the mongoose can't get in. It is about three feet off the ground and the chickens jump up into it. I dunno if ducks can jump that high, though.

It's a live animal trap. The small one would be fine. Dels sells them. The eggs I used were raw. I have chickens so eggs are easy for me to use. I have heard you can use just about anything. They are glorified rats!! Once they know there is a food source there they will be back[}Smile]

Canhle, So sorry to hear about the mongoose getting the baby ducks. I know how much you care for them, like family truly. I hope you have success with these methods you've been given. Please let us know how you have prospered catching the evil mongoose rats.

Hey you need a couple of cats, [Wink],[Wink], just let me know and I'll ship you two! LOL

Canhle, See Bob up at the ranch. We have one or two of thosee traps. They work great and you can borrow for as long as you need. We found that a piece of cheese or meat hung on the little bait hanter was all it took. Trapped one every night for about a week. They got the message and moved on; we haven't seen them around much this season. Good luck!

Just another day in P A R A D I S E !!

An egg is the best thing to use in the trap for a mongoose. If you use meat or cat food you might just trap your own cat, like I did...
