Volcano acting up
From KHNL:
http://www.khnl.com/global/story.asp?s=6977068

"There is no immediate threat in any of all of this. It has to change fundamentally the way it's erupted in order to go any distance much farther than it's already gone," explained lead scientist Jim Kauahikaua with the United States Geological Survey.

Time is an illusion, but a handy one. Without it, we would not be able to hear sounds, and without that ability, we would have no music.

Thanks for the KHNL article Glenn.

Talk about SENSATIONALISM! Can anyone guess why Chelsa Cohen was interviewed? I can think of two reasons...

LOL, Bill... I wasn't going to say anything about that......... But didn't you know all women in Pahoa just wear bikinis?

in all the talk over the last few days about the effort by harry kim to respond to the publics concern over the potential of the lava to impact communities in lower puna, as well as questions of infrastructure vulnerabilities etc., I found myself defending the cautious way in which harry apparently dodged the more controversial questions. if I was standing up there trying to put some sort of reassuring official face forward to calm the communities nerves, especially in light of how far away we are from any real disaster developing, I do not think questions of how the government will react if and when etc belonged in the current discussion.

in my opinion harry has shown, since the eruption that sent a lava flow towards kalapana in 1977, that he is a caring and responsible administrator that learns from prior experiences, and applies those lessons as new experiences demand. in his evolution of a policy that deals with those effected by lava inundation I believe he has, and I have faith that he will continue to, act with all of our best interest in heart and mind. and, that in the end the results will be something that we as a community can be proud of. as someone that saw first hand how things went through the spring of 1990 in kalapana I was extremely proud of harry throughout the experience. that does not mean a blind agreement with ever little thing he has done, but rather a deep respect for the myriad of forces that he has had to juggle, and the end results of his policies as a whole. I feel we couldnt be in any better hands with regards the current situation.

with all that said.. boy I sure can go on cant I... I do however feel that putting the questions.. and their answers.. of government policy in a disaster such as the one being discussed off until the last moment may not be the way to go either. especially in light of the current discussion across every community in puna about those very same issues. I would hope that the current awareness of our vulnerabilities would actually go a considerable way towards spurring everyone, private citizens and government officials alike, to resolve and put into policies and actions the answers to those questions.

I don’t have as much faith in Kim or his administration as do you, dakine.
I think it’s a bit irresponsible to wait over a month to hold your first briefing
on this event, no matter the out come of the eruption. Let the people know what’s going on! It also took them a month to get a Webster functioning with detailed information. The only way those of us who live out here could be informed of the proximity of the flow in relation to Pahoa was a very detailed map made by a fellow Puna Webber, not the local government.
I think he should have addressed this event much earlier and let everyone know that the situation is and give us weekly updates.
His administration has taken no action on a second evacuation route out of lower Puna.
What’s his plan? Maybe to follow a D-10 Bulldozer down Railroad Ave as the lava crosses Hwy 130?
I know our real estate taxes are low but it’s the government’s obligation to protect life and property.

Dakine, I agree with your feelings about Harry Kim. He spent countless hours in Kalapana during the traumatic times and was a great comfort to local residents. He was chastised by those who weren't there for getting too much overtime, but I know for a fact his motivation wasn't money. I also don't agree with everything he does, but am convinced that he's not a professional politician and in no one's pocket. I'm happy he wouldn't allow the Democratic machine to run him for Governor. They were just going to sacrifice him to the sharks on Oahu. Since this eruption has been going continously since the 80's, current information has always been available. No one's waiting until the last minute to inform people. I also don't think there's going to be an escape route anytime soon, because it would have to go through too many back yards and if Puna has filled up with anything, it's NIMBY's. In my humble opinion, a better strategy then waiting on government to guide me is to prepare for life without Hilo. This will obviously be more difficult for some people, but if Hwy 130 is breached, that is the simple logic of it. Get ready, or get out.

Harry Kim is venerated as an icon because of his efforts during the destruction of Kalapana and the fact that he has run an apparently honest administration. He is no great benefactor for Puna, though. When he appeared on the Honolulu Advertiser "Hot Seat" on-line forum earlier this year, he was directly asked about the lack of services and infrastructure by a frequent contributor to Hunter Bishop's blog. Kim's response was, "I don't want to patronize you with the usual excuses, BUT . . ." He then went on to recite the usual excuse about substandard subdivisions and even added that the County did not make as much in property taxes from Puna as it spends. What a guy!

Nice aloha Greg, “Get ready or get out”. Last time I checked this is still America, the land of free speech. We have this beautiful forum to communicate with others and because you don’t agree with my position of Kim and a second route out of here, your answer is for me and my family to have to leave??
I don’t get it???
Have a bit of respect or compassion for ALL of us who contribute on this site.
I think you are rude and way out of line.
Aloha
