People spreading coqui
#1
We need to keep watch for people deliberately spreading coqui frogs. In your neighborhood generally you know the cars that go through there. If you see an unfamiliar car parked in an odd location, write down the license plate number and make a note of what type and color of car it is, make a note of the people in it, too, if you can. Check back and if in a day or two you hear frogs there and there weren't any there before, report the license plate and description of the car to the police department and the Department of Agriculture and call 974-4000 ext. 67378.

If you don't happen to have paper and pen with you when you see the car, send a text message and take picture with your phone. If you see them releasing coqui, call the police immediately.

Transporting, harboring or importing coqui frogs with the intent to propagate, sell or release is a class C felony and subject to a MINIMUM fine of $50,000 and a maximum fine of $200,000 plus 3 years in jail.

Coqui frogs on their own will only expand their territory by 200 meters a year or so (I'm not sure of the exact number, but under a quarter mile). We are finding frogs in an area where they couldn't have dropped off of a vehicle or been brought in on a plant AND where an unknown car had been seen several nights before.

The police have told us to watch and write down the license plate numbers, you may want to do the same in your neighborhood.

This may be a stupid question, but why would anyone deliberately spread these pests?

Someone once jokingly suggested depositing 1,000 coquis on Harry Kim's lawn if we wanted a serious eradication project on the island, but this is the first I have heard of suspected intentional spreading. Chances are that this unknown vehicle was there for some other purpose such as thievery or making out, and the coquis just jumped off at that inopportune moment. In any case, it's not a bad idea to record plate numbers of cars in suspicious circumstances, just in case your lawn mower shows up missing later.

Cheers,
Jerry

I think it's terrible that people would do such a deed. But what would compel an individual to do such a thing?
On the other hand, I'm lost why people can't get use to these creatures living on their property?

The problem I have with calling the police everytime a strange car in in your hood is kinda crazy. I'm one of those guys who drive around other people's neighborhoods. I do it to check out people's landscaped yards for ideas for my place. I'd hate to think I'm gonna get hassled for doing this!

That question begs, why would people create and send viruses to computors? Because there are those out there that do these kinds of things. And because they can. Sad.....

shoot, these people are idiots that actually transport frogs... The only way to get real eradication is to get them somehow established in honolulu... Then maybe you'll see some action... But, why transport frogs when you could do it with a super small vile no bigger then .1 ounce of liquid frog eggs. They hatch on their own with out any support...

But spreading them around on the island is a bit stupid since they will naturally spread anyway... The big island is a lost cause... I suppose if they ever do get the super ferry going ... every island will be loaded with em.

As for keeping an eye out on strange cars!!! hahaha, if that worked then maybe we wouldn't have a meth problem?

Hey would could get rid of the frogs and the meth!!! WhooHoo!

HotzCatz, wait till you get fire ants spread around... Makes the Coqui seem like a dream!

IMHO the biggest speader of Coqui are our cars. You might be guilty of speading the frog yourself and not even know it.
Frogs can just jump on and off anytime they want to... Sorta a coqui Taxi system Smile

The problem is if your area is infected with coqui, there is no way to keep them from jumping onto your vehicles Sad

You go to Home Depot and park next to a truck from an infected area. That person is not intentional spreading the Frogs but he is unknownly doing it.. because frogs from his truck jump on your car... Now youve got frogs... now your guilty of speading the coqui too.

I hear frogs under cars in parking lots everytime I venture into populated areas. Just the other day I found one jumping around the shopping carts at Walmart. I got the cart from right next my where I had parked.

Everywhere that you park your car, that has coqui, your risking picking up a frog or 2 and spreading them.

Well, just remenber the COQUI, are keeping the people who don't really luv Hawaii from putting up with it's problems along with is many pluses. Sometimes, after a time of listening to their calls, it becomes like white noise, to some people and the noise is no longer noticeable, or at least not annoying.

Always do what evers next.

You can't destroy paradise by spreading coqui to save it from Californians.
