Furniture Bringing vs Leaving
#21
this topic can be gut rinching, frustrating and painful. When I moved from Oahu to Big Isle in Jan.1996,I went with the container, but still had to give up a lot. And,yes forget anything particle board as HiloHaeole said.I never want to move again after my last move.

I wish someone would fix the transporter....

good point regarding bugs bringing our things at least assures us of no bugs besides anything new we would want later can always be built as the house won't take forever....this time...focus & KISS ; )

Very funny, Thunderfoot! Haaahaa...transporter. I never want to move again - that was the WORST! I also check out Freecycle and last month saw a cedar chest and we went to pick it up...it was so termite ridden. So we went right to the Keaau dump. They didn't even want it so into the dumpster it went.

Our plans are to downsize at this point in our lives. Small footprint, small necessities. We will be bringing just enough bedroom furniture for two sparce bedrooms, and then there is the office, and livingroom.

Like others all tools and kitchen equipment will be brought with us. We will probably end up with too much furniture, but like HADave we'll find homes for what we eventually do not need.

When we were packing in 4-06 we weeded out old linens, clothing, dishes, tools, books, music, art. So the next time we start packing there will be less emotion as most decision making has been done. Well except for the papers and photos!

What doesn't survive the moisture, or the storage before the house is complete, well that is how it goes, but it is worth a try for things you are comfortable with or enjoy.

Being an avid artist that likes to collect and save soo much re-usable raw material ...ie pack rat...i do confess that this will be a monumental job...add to that we will also be starting a vacation rental business, we will need to bring over alot of stuff to make the place comfortable....so the moving part for me will be quite nerve racking.

I am wondering whether to bring my mandoline. I can't bear the thought of life (6 months a year) without it, but I don't want it to decay either. Anyone know how to keep it from warping?

I understand the concern about buying secondhand furniture here, but have had excellent experience buying a futon from someone on the Kona side. It and the solid wooden frame are in fabulous condition and it was a great deal at $100.

Also bought a used queen mattress from Smith's in Hilo -- they sell used hotel furniture and while you have to check their stuff carefully, they do have some good stuff and the mattress was clean, no mold or dirt for $150. Several friends have bought mattresses there too with good results. Also bought 2 glass topped round rattan tables from them for 10 each!

Some people at garage sales sell stuff for way too much here -- we were spoiled with garage sales in Sonoma County!

We're getting ready to ship stuff over -- but boxes of stuff only -- no furniture and we are slowly adding furniture as we find what we like. We love the bamboo and teak furniture from store of the same name in Hilo (and Kona) which is good quality and value.

It's all a personal decision, of course -- this is our version!

Aloha!

I agree with Krysinge. It is a personal choice. I've always had good luck finding deals wherever I am, and I'm not afraid to drive to the other side of the island to find something I need. Moving all the way from Connecticut, I found that it would cost more to ship the things we have than what they cost in the first place to buy. The house we're moving into is furnished, so we won't have th problem of needing new furniture for at least six months....

"You must be," said the cat "or you wouldnt have come here."

Has anyone purchased furniture from Paradise Plants? They have a good size selection upstairs. We were thinking of getting a Bamboo bedframe from them.

Our challange is to decide on what we need vs what we want and considering that neither of us has moved in over 20 years, should be fun!
