We have decided to put carpet in part of our new home. A few people have said carpet here is not a good thing. What are your thought or experience.

Carpet is not always a good choice even in a dry climate. Anyone got allergies, sinus issues? Carpet is not good for allergies - dust mites. Add the damp climate and now you will probably introduce mold.
All boils down to personal choice... My choice is no carpet.[:]]

Just had lunch today with a couple involved with ripping out all the remaining carpet in their home and replacing with ceramic tile - they have lived in Laupahoehoe house about 6 years.
We've opted for smaller, area rugs for a bit of softness.

When we can afford it, we are ripping out the carpet and laying tile and possibly laminate wood. It's cleaner.
Guys, we love the look and feel of your guesthouse. That's what we hope to have someday.

we only had carpet in one room of our house which is all cedar. guess what was the only room in our house to have mold? so now we also only have floor rugs. sometimes i do miss carpet but it just wasnt made for the tropics... my 2 cents..

I would agree with Area Rugs. If you have a problem with a rug, you would not have to rip it all out, just pick it up and take it away.

I will never have carpet again. It attracts to much dirt and mold. I have had wall to wall ceramic tile for the past 15 years. I won't have ceramic tile again either. It is way too hard, older bones and joints don't like it, and everything breaks when dropped. Next time it will be some of that high end padded vinyl tile or a wood. I figure the vinyl tile would be easier to keep as would the wood.

Wyatt,
My thoughts are that carpets are dirt and mold magnets. We went with tile and laminate and no carpet at all in our house. Very happy without the carpet.

Wyatt, If you are going to go with carpet make sure that you really check out the backing materials and the padding. There are materials that harbor mold & moisture & dirt and ones that are more resistant. In our last mainland house, we had hardwood on the main floors, but there was carpeting in the walk out basement studio....it was a thick plush with a foam chip padding, and was yuck...when we were looking to replace it we were lucky to have very good advise, in an area that may have moisture, get the most closed cell pad you can, tight fiber pile, not cut loop, with a good moisture resistant backing & adhesive...
That said, I would not carpet again unless the carpeted areas had very limited & very clean traffic.

Oink I'm with you and the old bones. Not quite there yet, but planning for the future!LOl
So my question is why vinyl tiles? I've seen it around, but wouldn't the tiles be subject to moisture penetration when mopping. Why not vinyl sheet, less seems, and perhaps longer life??
One last question, guess I don't get out much, what is cushioned vinyl tile?
