An attempt to divert lava
#41
Lava is constantly going into the ocean, isn't it?

Nope! I believe the ocean flows stopped around Father's Day when the floor of Pu'u O'o caved in. The fissures beside the vent are now the source.

It's a shame...we used to hike out to the surface flows and roast marshmallows and hot dogs. Oh well...at least we can say we did it!

An Impact Statement? Surely you jest! The whole island is made of lava, and formed where it used to be open sea! (A slight impact, right?)
The hot ponds make an impact, the sulfuric acid makes an impact, even clouds make an impact. Luckily, the VOG goes over to Kona and not over the eastern oceanfrontage, eh?

Remember those photos of Kalpana, when the poor fish were trying to jump out of the boiling water? They were captive in their warm ponds, when the flow from below superheated them. At least, if the flow was on the surface, those ledges would form. WHen they collapse though, who knows what critters were impacted?

There never is an easy answer to anything difficult in life, as the above responses have proven.

"Look at the maps and notice where the lava has gone in the last hundred years. What makes you think anything different is going to happen in the next century?"

Because we can learn from history so we can change the future? That is if our government is willing to serve. I agree about Hilo and Kailua, that the state would figure something out and give it their best shot. Glen, thanks for the chuckles...looks like this heated discussion needed some of your good humor.

I just dropped in to check out rentals and couldn't resist dropping in my .02.
