Superferry foes gathering to fight special session

Either way, they still shouldn't make special laws to benefit one company.

In the same manner they shouldn't make special restrictions to run a business out of the state.

I don't believe, Matson, Young Brother's, all of the airlines or even the cruise lines (which do 22 knots) didn't have to do an EA or EIS.

WOW, special treatment to support a business????

This happens all the time on the mainland. Usually some sweetheart of a deal attempting to lure a manufacturing or other major potential employer to the area. In the south there'd be bidding wars between the states to see you could give away the most. It's how BMW, Mercedes, and others built their plants in South Carolina, Alabama, etc.

I hadn't really thought about the potential of weekend/vacation Oahu traffic coming here, I was thinking mainly about the reverse. I have to say the thought is a bit chilling, the influx of noisy Harley riders in August/September is already particularly irritating to me since I currently live right on the Volcano highway. I suppose it could get even worse with the Superferry.

Nice to ride but the weather here is very unpredictable...lotta rain in Hilo area...if I were to ride it would be Kona side for sure if I had to plan ahead anyway. For a last minute ride I guess BI is okay - then you can tell the weather.

Seems like more people would be interested in the Volcano and more tour buses up that way. The other islands have plenty of bikes, but they don't have a volcano to check out.

Food for thought in regards to Superferry. When
Go Airlines is forced out of Hawaii, I'm willing to bet a lot of people are going to regret fighting the HSF. Especially when HA/AQ jack airfares up to 200.00 round trip again.

listen the price offered up by the Super Ferry is only for the intorduction to the state in hopes of rally the community behind it. After one year or even less their prices will be out of reach for the average Big Island resident.

I'm 54 years old, have spent most of my life in and around the ocean. Over the years I have been involved with 'Green Peace', 'Earth Now', and even the 'Sierra Club'. In the early 70's I got to swim with the Humpbacks off Lahaina filmed by National Geo, and Green Peace. But please don't assume that I'm a "tree hugger'. I just love mother nature to no end, and hate to see it get trampled for $$$$. As a young boy growing up in Lahaina I spent my days in Spring & Summer surfing in and around Lahaina. We kids use to pick up small rocks and throw them at the Ama-ama crabs on the breakwalls surrounding the harbor. Upon hitting these little creatures, we'd pick them up and suck the insides of the shell, very tasty. But I haven't been able to do that since about 1975 or so! Why? Pollution caused by small business. Sport fishing boats, Glass bottom boats, Whale watching ships, and the list goes on. Well because of this business growth at the Lahaina Harbor, it become polluted! To the average Joe, you'd think everything was kosher. But I could no longer go for Ama-ama crabs, nor could I dive the harbor anymore for coins that the tourist use to throw. I just didn't dig that film of gasoline all over my body that was caused by the boat from motoring in and out of the harbor all day long.

I don't trust our State Govner Linda Lingle[berries], or the Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hanneman. I almost lost my left leg because of the raw sewage Mayor Mufi okayed to be dumped into the Ala Wai.

No, I'm no "tree hugger", my old co-workers(waikiki Beachboys) can acknowledge that. I didn't have the nickname "Hitman", because I was a "tree hugger"...but I do defend Mother Earth from Morons & Village Idiots who try exploit our beautiful land!
I swear to you all, supporting the Super Ferry will be a big mistake!

It's interesting you mention Mufi Hanneman, Beachboy. He ran for Mayor here on the Big Island fifteen or so years ago. He was C. Brewer's rising star. Fortunatly, he lost and then showed his lack of commitment by immediatly moving to Honolulu. Now they're stuck with him. I wish him success in O'ahu politics (otherwise he might show up here again).

politics are terrible in Hawaii! Working down on the beach in Waikiki, I'd come into contact with these jerks from both sides of the isle. Mufi has this terrible sister who demands free rooms from the Big Hotels in Waikiki just because her brother is governor! I had a three month battle to keep my left leg because of that bastard!
At the end of the day, it's obvious that money runs the state. Why else would they even consider a special session for HSF? The legislature has the authority to create any law they see fit, but it is wrong to change the law merely to satisfy one business, right?

But my main concern is safety for the sea life mammals, Humpbacks, Dolphins, etc,etc..and of course the enviornment. When Hawaii had the Hydro foil back in the 70's, it hit several humpbacks and their calves. Even one of the hydro foils caught fire too out at sea.

I'm not sure why, but this video brought a tear to my eyes. To see the state so divided over HSF is terrible. Notice in this video, it's the surfers who protest the HSF. These are the people who really love the ocean, I know I'm one of them! The people who support HSF tend be local residents who are looking for cheap transportation between island and who could care less about the envionmental impact the HSF may cause our islands. Lingle wants to boat to run, and I hope it ends her political career in Hawaii!
The HSF came here at a cost of 200 million, and they decided(Lingle & co.) that they'd try to slip the HSF under the radar? Plus as they said in video Kahalui Harbor needs 40 million dollars worth of renovation just to dock that beast there.

Go to a website called "Island Breath" by Kauai residents for another HSF point of view.

We used to live right in Honomu where the bikers would stop. We thought of it as a little local color for the day. Usually it was just a few hours on the Saturday morning of the holiday weekend.

What worries me with all the "anti" campaigns is that Hawaii becomes as dull and colorless and PC as Oregon, Wash, and No Cal (So Cal has managed to retain its local colorfulness and character despite No Cal best intentions).

Sorry to digress from the topic.....
