Free range chickens, are they fair game?
[

Am I wrong? Should I build another trap and lend it out to others? The trap works great and all it takes is a couple of dollars of feed.

Sounds like a good idea to me...

My understanding is that the only subdivision in your cluster of subdivisions with rules against chickens is Hawaiian Shores Recreation Estates. Many people have decided against buying in Hawaiian Beaches because of the chickens; they figured it would be an uphill battle to change the local culture (plus who wants to turn your new neighbors into enemies) so they just bought in a chicken free neighborhood.
That whole area is zoned agricultural, so technically your neighbors have every right to keep chickens. If you trap free ranging birds you will probably not make any friends amongst people who have been living there with their free range chickens for a long time. Chickens are a huge part of the local culture and many people are very attached to their birds. Carol

It could also be looked at from the other side, the people raising the chickens are not making friends with their neighbors...

But they were there first. People who move into a neighborhood and then expect it to change to conform to their standards are just not realistic. If you don't want to live around chickens in Hawaii you should move into a neighborhood which doesn't allow them, not expect preexisting neighbors to change their ways for you.

Well said, Carol!
Also, with the emphasis on sustainability these days, as well as the shutting down of the Big Island's commercial chicken farm in the past year, chickens help some people survive. I get two eggs a day from my pair of hens (I don't have roosters) and there's nothing like FRESH eggs! (My ex took ag training in the Air Force ...yes, I said A.F... years ago and learned that eggs can be sold commercially for up to 2 years after laying! Don't know what the current standards are but we never were too crazy for eggs after that). Also, the Humane Society used to loan me a trap to catch chickens some years back. Bet they still loan them out.

LOL...
Are you sure they were there first? Sounds like an assumption on your part. Are chickens native to Hawaii? I got the impression that Tom had been around a long time. Personally chickens don't bother me, but if they move in under my house or start tearing up things, "I" will be having a BBQ. you are also saying that if preexisting neighbors are using your land to raise the chickens, you just need to deal with it? I don't think so. Transplanted Texan "I am here to chew bubble gum and kick some *** ... and I'm all out of bubble gum"
