Is there still a waiting period to get hooked up to water in Hawaiian Shores, Hawaiian Beaches and Hawaiian Parks subdivision. I am sure I read in this forum some time ago that this was the case. I am thinking of building sooner on my lot in Hawaiian Parks than I had originally planned. The Canadian dollar has improved so much lately against the green back I think it is time to make the plunge.

If your lot is in Hawaiian Parks, you probably are subject to the moratorium on new hookups (and when you can get connected expect to pay a lot more for the connection).

Thanks for the reply John. It sounds like the moratorium only applies to Hawaiian Parks, and then why only Hawaiian Parks. And yes, my lot is in Hawaiian Parks. Any idea how long one might have to wait? Also, how much more will it cost to get connected and are the monthly fees going to cost more? I am thinking this should still be cheaper than installing a catchment system. But then I have heard on another thread that a lot of people love catchment. Anyhow, thanks again.

The moratorium applies to Hawaiian Beaches, Parks and Shores (but not Shores Rec). The water company that services Beaches, Parks and Shores is at full capacity. I don't know the exact rates, but they are definitely increasing significantly.
The company has said it will be a year but I think they are being optimistic.

John,
What happened to the expansion of wells on the island? There are several in at least the planning stages, but the lack of water hookups would be an effective way of controlling growth.

You might look into having Daniel Diamond drill you a water well. If I were at that elevation I'd do it in a heart beat.

re catchment -- not sure how close you are to the ocean, but the closer you get, the less rain.
Also, a catchment tank is not bad on a lot that's 1/2 acre or more, but I think on a residential lot it would be a drag to give up that much footprint to a tank. They are not attractive. I would try to avoid going catchment.

Thanks Kathy. I really do not want have a catchment system and my lot is only 1/4 acre. I would be concerned about maintaining the thing. We live in Canada and can not just move to Puna like you American Citizens can. We can only spend 180 days per calander year in the US. So, I feel that getting hooked up to the water system would be a needed before I can build. I saw an add for a waterfront lot that said the new watermeters would be available in early 2008. But I think that John probably knows best from my experiences on these threads. Still, I can't wait until I can build. I just love Aloha and Hawai'i

Here is a possible alternative:
It ispossible to build a catchment tank into the lower story of a two story home. No impact on your yard area. I know people who have never hooked up their roof and gutters saying that they prefer to simply purchase water by the truckloads when needed. The cost, they say, is about the same as metered water from a water system.
When you finally hook up to metered water you could reclaim the "tank" area as a room.
Just a possibility.
Another version of this might be to install a bolt together steel tank in the yard, purchase water as described. Hook up to metered water when it becomes available and then resell your steel water tank.
Assume the best and ask questions.
