I came home about a year ago to find a dissapointing disaster area of scattered possessions and several smaller items stolen. Some of considerable dollar or sentimental value. I had installed a "double-cylinder" deadbolt in the glass entry doors a month previously when someone (the same person?) broke into an outbuilding. The new deadbolt requires a key on both sides and the intruder would've needed to noisily break through the exposed glass front door, so he could only remove items he was willing to take back out the window or risk being seen/heard breaking through the front door. I suspect it was a kid on foot, and this may have been part of the reason that only small items were taken.
I bought a Radioshack motion detector alarm subsequently for a little over $100.00. It also has wireless sensors that can be installed in doors and windows. The unit calls me on my cell when it detects motion. The motion sensor was triggered in one false alarm when I mistakenly had it set to detect only one motion. No false alarms yet since I reset it for two detections. It's cheap but has the drawback that alarm calls require you to dash home or call police or a helpful neighbor who hopefully won't be endangered. The hassle of installing (minimal), setting, disarming, and maintaining the system with its battery backup and sensors is a drag, but not insurmountable. Housebound pets can trigger the interior motion sensor.

Jeez, what a heartbreak...
Having lived many years way off the beaten track on the mainland, we realized that someone could take a chainsaw to our doors and no one would be the wiser. Way before easily installed and supported camera systems. In the bay area, we frequently drove our old Miata around, with the policy that you NEVER leave anything of value in it, and you don't lock it. Opening the door and discovering nothing of value is cheaper than a slit ragtop.
That said, I have to say that our gate and fencing is a deterrant, but only for those who accept that as a "don't come in". We don't leave valuables in sight when we're away.
Who knew that you were going to be gone, and who knew that the laptop was there?
So sorry -- hope you had backups of important data. The piece of equipment is not as important as what it contained. Glad you have neighbors who are concerned and watchful.
This is an issue that anyone in remote rural areas has to address in their own way. All the police patrols or well-intentioned neighborhood watches can't be 100%, and you can't set up entrapment scenarios.
I don't have the answer -- there isn't any "one" answer. For us, it's a risk evaluation, care, and good neighbor relations.

Yeah I got hit Sunday night right after sunset. I live on Kaloli point, and they got my Honda scooter from behind my house while my dog was in the yard, and my grandmother was inside. Ballsy f*&^kers.
Hope their karma catches up.

Do you mind telling us roughly where you are on the point? I am on the point, too. Have you told the local neighborhood watch? My neighbor (actually former neighbor) had her lawnmower stolen right in front of her.

A few years back, ag thefts (crops and tools)were rampant. One dark night an immigrant farmer caught an armed(machete) theif red handed, and blew him away with a shotgun. Probably because of public support, the farmer was freed, as justified homicide/self defense was the verdict. For some reason, ag thefts have muchly dried up here. Plus as you folks are so determined to change and purify the region to your standards. Kill walmarts, kill tour flights, no geothermal expansion etc., what kind of future (jobs)are you proposing for youth now big ag is gone? Do think you could save the funds to build a house with a hilo job, mabe a tourist job in kona, but we don't want tourism either, do we. NS oahu has resisted all resort activities, and in the keep the country country(the motto here), which has resulted in ethnic cleansing "white is right". There is theft here, but most have elaborate security systems, even private security guards. Why don't you hire private security patrols who can concentrate on your subdivision. The private patrolcars were justified partially by 24 hour radio eyes, and the cops like the subsidy for their wheels(free gas etc). They're supposed to be phasing out to blue @whites!

Quote "I also wonder why - if we can embed an ID chip in a dog why can't we embed one in our skilsaw? Maybe we can.
Ya gotta be proactive to combat these creeps".
Well the technology is here and has been for some time. This is all new to me but here is a site, and the FAQ's is interesting as well as sponsors of chip tech. Interesting can be used for good or bad, the RFIBD?
