Bad weather on its way.

its only 6 Am but here is the weather from Kapoho - been raining all night, lighting too. Thunder is far away in the distance. Not too much wind.

Looks like we will have snow for Christmas (on Mauna Kea)!

The snow started at about 10,500. I went up there last night and played in it for a while. It was cold, maybe in the 20's or 30's. Strong winds made the snow sting my face, but all in all at 11,200 ft. I would say there was about 2-3 inches plus the deeper areas where the snow had drifted. The road was very slick so I would not suggest going up unless you are experienced in winter driving. I grew up in Utah (the greatest snow on earth...) so it comes as second nature to meSmile

Cat, The most concise I have found is this report, from Hilo airport:
http://www.hamweather.net/local/us/hi/keaau.html
The rainfall totals are reported hourly in the 'PAST WEATHER' tab...
I do know there are some people around Puna that do have weatherstations that are tied into some data collections, just don't know how to access it from off campus.....

Yah I looked at that one which is why I was looking for something more accurate -- or Keaau has gotten very little rain while Kapoho has gotten buckets. All the links I found showed rainfall at 1-3 inches. Our rough estimate is somewhere closer to 10" but I did notice in a weird anomoly that Kapoho is gettign more rain than up the mountain.

It's Friday night at 10 PM. I would not be surprised to find this billowimg rain coming down at up to 10 inches an hour... it is flooding! The ligntening is flashing every 10 seconds or so and the sound of the thunder is deafening. It is as if the center of a huge storm is right over our place! Is anyone else experiencing this? Is it focused here in Glenwood or is it much larger and covering much of the island?

The lightening is so bright it is lighting up the WHOLE sky each time, as if the sun had an rapid on/off switch.

It is going to be something to see the woods and the roads in the morning. Holly Molly....

Just another day in P A R A D I S E !!

hit the floor each morning, the devil says

"Oh Crap, She's up!"

I haven't checked in for a while. Did anyone feel the thunder shake their house about 11 p.m.? We're up near Volcano Golf Course. The lighting seemed to be north of us (Puna way)and then overhead and then north again. Bad night to be on the computer, I know.

Pslamont - I was still kinda shaken up when I posted and even though I scanned the other posts for lightening news didn't see yours.
Yes, we had the same experience. After an unusually loud boom I peek out the window just as the porch lit up...it did seem to be right over head and with less than a second between lightening and thunder. Power went off and back on right away. My son had unplugged his computer, but I didn't want to go near mine in front of the window lol We sat in the hall till the time between lightening and thunder expanded. I'm used to lightening that lights up a room but man this thunder was really boooming...It would be interesting to find out how close it was and to others. Last year it was striking people's yards and homes in HPP (a friend of mine there got a big zap when opening her fridge).
I was trying to be brave and work through it but when the big boom shook my chair I FLEW into the hall and stayed there with my son and cats who joined us till it passed LOl
Was your Internet down? We were offline ALL day.
