Trolls and the art of trolling
#21
Sometimes there is a fine line between "provocative" in the sense of intending to make others think seriously and "provocative" in the sense of intending to stir up anger and discord for their own sake. I don't envy Rob in his task of keeping the lid on personal attacks and the salacious. I think he does a remarkable job and only intervenes when it's really necessary.

Having said that, I still can appreciate someone who makes me think about an issue in a different way, even if it might make me a little angry. Anything that broadens my perspective, whether it changes my opinion or not, is good for me. Personal attacks and name calling DON'T fall into this category, though.

Cheerfully taking in all that Punaweb has to offer,
Jerry

I agree with that Jenny. Although in order for me to keep listening to that person, they have to demonstrate they can listen, really listen, to responses to their position.

If they can't hear and address things coherently and open-mindedly, then the other perspective is just a rant, as far as I'm concerned.

Not that there's anything wrong with a good rant!
But as a 24/7 state of mind it's not enlightening.

Thanks, Rob. It's a wonderful site and I too appreciate what you do greatly. btw, I had no idea there were post limits. I figured one or two replies to any topic of interest per day would be OK, on my part, well no, actually I never thought about rationing my replies.

Is this a rule to follow? If so I'll pick my topics carefully and I guess avoid light-hearted one liners. Or is this rule for people who are trying to dominate and troll? Just wish to be clear on any guidelines.

Thanks, Rob.
For some months I peeked into here and did not feel compelled to join much of the talk. (Far too many better things to do, instead of sitting here trolling and trashing.)
Lately I've been back and participating, because the topics seemed more practical and not just b.s., and the sentiments expressed more meaningful.
Whether quite the right approach or not I am not sure, but here as in other discourse, I try to address the message and not the messenger. Try. Sometimes it does seem right to question meaning and motivation. Also, elected officials can justifiably get called up on specific positions (or lack thereof) on specific issues.
As for hiding behind fake names: not here, not anywhere else.

I echo the words above. I hope no one gets sick of me posting things.

I'm not a troll but I do like to read all the comments. If I have something to say, then I will say it.

I would assume that if it's not in an attacking nature, that the AMOUNT of posts shouldn't matter.

As Punaweb gains more and more members, there will of course be more things to comment about and talk about.

I'm sure Rob will let members know when he feels that they are acting up.

And I hope I don't step on any toes, however, if I do, please feel free to let me know.

Damon

I have never had a rule limiting posts. Recently I set a limit on one member to rein in a stampede of postings.

If people can communicate comfortably and effectively that is what this forum is for.

There is no expectation on my part that I can keep everyone happy all the time. I intend to favor the overall over any one individual - a position that is guaranteed to irk some individuals.

Thanks Rob. That's what I thought you did, but then other people started talking about their post per day average and it worried me.

No Damon, please post away!

Aloha Punawebbers,

We have once again entered the land of Trolls and I want to refresh the topic a bit.

I view Trolls as bullies. We have some about who seem to enjoy playing the bully and the pain and fear they instill in a victim. This offends my sense of fairness and I am not tolerant of people preferring to have their names removed from PW because of the attacks they are subject to.

Yesterday I locked a topic where a simple request for volunteers turned into a Troll magnet. While some of these bullies might pretend to hide under the banner of free speech it is a lie. It is not free speech they are practicing. Trolling is in it's way a mild form of cyber terrorism.

If any of you out there feel that I have tried to attach the Troll label to you then you are right. And you are fully aware of who you are.

To deal with this issue and others there will be some changes coming to PW soon which I hope will make things clearer and easier for everyone.

Feel free to continue with a discussion of trolling here if you wish.

Trolls are like people who paint grafitti on the side of a building/bridge, etc. No use to anyone and generally make the world uglier for the rest of us.

I think I'm guilty of Trolling.

When I first started posting on PW I was posting baited questions.
And generally being a snappy writer. And hiding behind my made up name. I'm still not revealing my true identity. Does that make me a Troll?

Oh well, Sticks and stones...Sticks and stones.

I still have controversy in my blood but now instead of Trolling I am
Con-Trolling myself.

I thought I was being Censored but I learned that I was just being Moderated.

There are some highly educated people on PW and I respect their opinions. Don't always agree with them but I am capable of being persuaded otherwise at times.

This is a learning experience and Kudos to Rob for allowing the Rants and mudslinging to go on to an extent.

I would have stopped participating on this forum a long time ago if not.

One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.
