Waste Incinerator Proposed For NELHA

Not to be too nasty about facts and all that, but check out Hawaii's fastest growing export: bottled desalinated deep sea water from Kona.

I had to double check the Official State Report and it says this:

In percentage terms, Hawaii's fastest-growing manufactured export category is beverages and tobacco products, which rose over 3,400 percent from $1.1 million in 2002 to $38 million in 2006. Other fast-growing manufactured exports during this period were primary metal manufactures (up 692 percent), plastics and rubber products (up 218 percent), fabricated metal products (up 213 percent), and wood products (up 207 percent)

However this report is from a 2006 report using the previous 4 years data.

The article I referenced is from Oct. 10, 2007.

So there is probably truth in both.

Completely untrue!

.....Until this year the market for 'unsweetened' water was tasting pretty sweet, but sales of the desalinated water have fallen 5% in the first three months of this year. The decline may not indicate a lack of takers on the seawater market, but several other countries are breaking into this latest trend in bottled drinking water
"

Thanks Damon. I wasn't quite 100% correct, but that's OK, here. Right Rob.

My next point is speculation, with no way to verify it:
Should heavy metals, such as are 'rumored' to be around rubbish burning, touch that water one time, the sales will fall by 100%.

Damon,

Why should I bother trying to "educate" you about NELHA.When the reality is you will just belittle what I have to say. You don't even live here. Thus you don't have to deal with the consequences of this ill fated venture.

Its very easy being a armchair quarterback when you are thousands of miles away.

If you want to learn more about NELHA, check
out their website http://www.nelha.org

Aquaculture is one of the possibilities that will diversify our economy here. Building a waste incinerator there is WORST POSSIBLE scenario.

Take a look at this link too.

Kona Deep (bottled water) was laying off workers earlier this year. I don't take that as a sign of growth.

I do agree with Aaron that this proposed location is not well thought out.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Oh, sorry Damon, I didn't realize you were, to put it scientifically, ignorant.
I'll not bother to read your posts in the future.

James,

You might consider backing up a notch. I don't see that comment adding to anything.

Aaron - I'm sorry if you think I'm belittling you. That was not my intention at all.

We must all remember that this is simply a "Proposal" at this point and the more we can educate ourselves on the issue the more prepared we can be when the proposal comes before the council.

Getting all worked up over it serves no purpose. I'm willing to listen to all sides of the issues.

And P.S. Aaron - I'm just on Oahu, coming home soon. I say bring the dang proposal over to Oahu and send Big Islands garbage back to Oahu on the Superferry.

And bonus points to you for mentioning the Aquaculture. I'm a big believer in it too.

Sorry,

My Ph is a Ph ADD.

That is your choice who you choose to read and respond to.

I'm not here to be in pissing matches.
Just learn and talk about issues.

No need get huffy over stuff.

Everyone has there own topics that interest and bother them more then others.

I was hoping Aaron would be willing to share more of his direct knowledge with us all, not just me.

Why does that really ring hollow to me.If you really supported aquaculture at NELHA, you would not support this proposal.

James brings up a excellent point a few posts back.

"Should heavy metals, such as are 'rumored' to be around rubbish burning, touch that water one time, the sales will fall by 100%."

The council will not part of approving this project Since its on state land, the approval process will be streamlined . At least thats
what this article.

http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/articles/...ocal07.txt

"It also will be easier to get the required state and federal permits being located at an experimental energy incubator, they said. There are few areas on the Big Island that aren't seismic zones, of hydrologic importance or away from residential areas that would object to the facility, said
BioEnergy engineering consultant Imre Szekelyhidi."

I don't see why communication means someone has to "win". The exchange of ideas does not require a victor... or agreement.
