we went to check on our lot up at mauna loa estates. lo and behold the chain/locks were cut. even the chain link fence. the perp replaced the lock with his/her own and erected a tent and took down our no trespassing signs. this is a corner lot and very visible. met some new neighbors who said that they had been vandalized twice. the saddest part for me was that the person destroyed several ohia trees and hapu'u fern. we dismantled the "campsite" and threw everything away.[}

Good for you! If/when you want any hapu'u to landscape, let me know. I have hundreds and they are easy to transplant. Keep a good eye on your lot; they may be back!

thanks pam. we're okay with the hapu'u over here in fern forest--got lots of them. the 'ohia over there (mauna loa estates) is gone forever. we're thinking of selling that lot anyway, maybe next year. but, will keep an eye on it.

I think you should report it. I am sorry this happened to you.

Glen is right. The mantra of us Neighborhood Watch types is, "Report everything!" The police may not respond every time or thoroughly investigate every incident, but they do track citizen reports and this can affect resource allocation and patrolling patterns. Our Community Police Officer Finkey stresses this at our meetings.
This must have been unsettling (no pun intended) to you Kan-lehua, and I hope there wasn't any significant damage to the property.
Cheers,
Jerry

unfortunately it's happening a lot in HPP. The people who are swatting in HPP are "Micronesians" mostly. In you neck of the woods it could be young hippie types. I not sure Micronesians are that far out of Hilo in your neck of the woods Kani-lehua. Shouldn't be to hard to find out. If your lot was fairly clean( no opala),probably hippie types. If you had all types of Opala, it was "Microdots",they have no concept of trash!

darn it! we thought of reporting it, but didn't. not smart at all on our part.
the lot (no house on it) had been cleared for a driveway by the previous owner but had overgrown when we bought it in 2006. the "camper" more than likely was male because the tarp was secured with metal straps and there was a 5 gallon empty paint bucket there. the person accessed the property by making trails (not all of it was fenced in) and cutting the chain link at the driveway. the only damage was to the trees and fern.
on the other hand, the young couple across the street said that they had been vandalized twice but didn't go into detail. while they're building, they stay with the woman's parents just two blocks away.
as far as fern forest: we don't really see people walking around. usually there is a lady and her dog and a guy and his dog. but, they look like they belong in the neighborhood. we see others, but only while passing eachother in our cars. seems as though most folk around here keep to themselves.

I guess I didn't say it, but I do believe it is VERY IMPORTANT to report this. Even though the police will not be able to do anything now, if they get a record of events, it can influence decisions, actions and availability down the road.
