Waste Incinerator Proposed For NELHA
#81
It doesn't look like it's going to happen.

...Kim said trucking East Hawaii trash to Kona is out of the question...

Nuff said.

Does anyone know if Hawaiian Cement has a kiln or are they a grinding only facility? Their website does not give much information. If we have to burn trash I would rather see it replace an existing fuel stream than put up another smoke stack.

I wouldn't want to see an incinerator on any island, but if we can't reduce, recycle, or reuse enough trash it has to go some where. Has some one put on paper how many tons of trash going to the landfill could be reduced if a strict RRR policy was followed? Is it really viable? I hope so.

This company seems to be into tapping gas from landfills. All understanding I have is that the South Hilo Landfill is not suited to mining -- it is unlined.
More basically, the material that would make gas in a landfill are the 'organics' -- paper, food, some wood, and green stuff. All of this is readily compostable, or converted into methan and then compost. There is no purpose in putting organics in the landfill to start with.

Whoa, lets back up a minute. If the landfills aren't lined shouldn't they be?

Yes, all new landfills must be lined and capped. However, if a landfill isn’t lined there really is no way short of removing all the contaminants and rubbish and line it, not something that can be done after the fact.

If this company is mining landfills to produce energy then perhaps this is something hawaii should look at seriously.

Mining for methane is nothing more than installing a collection pipe system and harvesting the methane gas for fuel, It still does nothing for the collected waste and hazardous leeching that occurs to the environment. Landfills are by their nature, are hazardous waste sites. But there have been accidents from methane gas explosions in these systems.

Maybe I'm just green dreaming but I see landfills like huge organic compost heaps churning out usable gas with an eventual byproduct of organic fertilizer.

Landfills can not produce fertilizer. Besides the organic waste deposited in landfills, there’s equally as much non-organic waste. You have tires, oil, chemicals, medical waste, asbestos, dirty diapers, dog food, dogs, wood, mercury, chromium, arsenic, lye, weeds, Weed, drugs, aluminum, iron, glass, plastics, computers, toner cartridges, electronic parts, batteries, car engines, lawn mowers, gas cans, light bulbs, spoiled food, contaminated food, leather, clothing, human waste human parts, and heaven forbid – Auntie Irma’s home made fruit cake; all stewing in a big toxic mash. Would you want that fertilizing your garden?

Current regulations place something like ten-year separation from date of capping to date it can be converted to a brown field. That’s just to let the trash start to compact, methane extractors be installed, and testing of clean fill above the cap to make sure nothing toxic is seeping above the cap. The key word in all regulations is “Toxic”. And, this is what’s known. Few have attempted to dissect a municipal landfill due to the dangers. Sometimes it’s best to not arouse the unknown.

Number 1 Fact! NELHA was originally made for an electrical generation facility. It was considered a complete failure and was from the start an experiment. The aquaculture was supposed to be a spin off of the money making electricity. Could these companies survive if they had to cover the operation and maintenance of the facility plus rent? Right now there is a major crack somewhere in the system , and a professional meeting is scheduled to fix the leak. It's plastic pipe consult a wide range plumber for repairing plastic, put him with a deep diver/mechanic pastics engineer (field). Give em a plan, support and finance them, or take bids. The UH was instrumental in this and geothermal Well#1, and I think Kohala task force (the biggest flop of all).

The geothermal is the only one left and it has massive potental to do good, but get's little recognition. Because it aint under their control.

Now a substitute is needed, on the west side and again the state tried and a good lot of aquaculture+strawberries and famous limu strains were developed, and it's time they start carrying the load !

But this facility was dedicated as an electrical generation facility and it should keep the promise to the state's citizens. Burn Baby Burn!
