Moronic politics killed this 2 yrs ago -- the people causing most of the trouble did not get re-elected.
Strange thing about the StarBulletin article is it quotes Barbara Bell as EnvMgt Director -- she has been gone for months!!

"peak oil" may serve as a useful banner under which to try to get some folks -- on high and down low -- to wake up and get the message about the futility of the petroleum economy.
however, from behind the steering wheel of our 4-cylinder, 33mpg car, it looks to me like the environmental degradation caused by burning, and the vulnerable/insecure supply for, petroleum is a larger issue -- in fact, with these two issues, perversely, the sooner petroleum is depleted, all the better!

Peak oil is kind of a misnomer...there's plenty of oil around but the EASY to extract oil is running out. But with oil at $100/barrel some of the tar sand stuff in Canada and especially Venezuela start looking profitable. Heck,at 100 bucks a barrel Venezuela has the largest oil supplies around and starts to shift the balance of power in OPEC. Of course tar sand extraction of oil will be environmentally unpleasant . Hawaii should grow hemp and go to biodiesel...solar and wind wouldn't hurt either.
