How open and tolerant should Punaweb be?

Two suggestions for perhaps "temporary" forums =

"The DogHouse" You move questionable (in your opinion) posts here for a probationary period (maybe 3 days). If cleaned up, they move back, if not, they disappear.

"The Water Cooler" A temporary forum that gets opened for a preset limited time to discuss a single, limited, perhaps controversial topic, ie the national elections as relates to Hawaii. At predetermined time/event, this forum is cleaned out until next topic.

Listen to David M, Rob.
The man is way beyond brilliant.

Give it a whirl.
Just as experiment.
See if PunaWeb participants can be treated as adults.

Ohhh.
And another thing.
I agree wholeheartedly with lquade.

The number-of-posts thingie and the little god-I'm-wonderful labels are just-plain-silly. They do nothing but encourage the Narcissists. Not just here on Punaweb, but on all sites that use them.

Oooooh.
Ooooooooh.
Look! If I make just a couple more posts, I'll be Queen Lili'uokalani herself!

Thank you in advance for seriously contemplating these changes, Rob.
David M's and lquade's, alike.

Rob, when reading that "other" thread started about the PW...I thought to myself, "don't bite." Unfortunately when there's hateful stuff said and attacks on the underdog, I tend to jump in to defend. I didn't do it this time because you have reminded me about trolls and people who like to get our dander up.

Like so many others, Tony and I would not be here were it not for PunaWeb. We learned so much in the early months and have opened ourselves up to several kind and generous people from this forum.

You know I don't care for blanket statements about any culture or gender. It's nice to be able to learn something from others.

Yes, I have a large number of posts. Most of them from the early months, when we were "researching" our home in Puna. Sometimes I feel a giggle coming on and have to let it out. Punaweb is a great place for that too. I don't post just to see the number go up. The number isn't even a factor to me. In my mind, a thread can be much like a conversation, where we can banter back and forth a little and talk story.

There are many personalities in life as on this forum. I think we can all play together and certainly many of us have been dope slapped a couple of times by other members. So we get over it and move on. Dope slaps we can handle and still go to a Punaweb party and break bread. It's the uncontrolled spewing of venom that is hard to tolerate.

You're doing great Rob...no butt-kissing intended.[Big Grin][Big Grin]

So the question on this topic is: How open and tolerant should Punaweb be?

Ya know I've been a lot of forums.

This one the balance is as close to perfect I think that I have ever seen. You can never reach "PERFECT" ....

I wonder if that is the real question behind this post tho... I mean, did something come up that made you want to post? Hmmm, The only thing I can say about this place is...

I am not sure how much time you put in on this great forum ... BUT... I ma thinking a lot of time must go into punaweb.

Maybe, we could have some other people below you to help you out?

Just a few suggestions! Keep up the excellent work!

Before we retire, let me add to the praise for Rob. This is such a comfortable community forum! You have been very successful in keeping in relevant and civil. I don't like reading rants where I'm looking for information. I probably would not have been as tolerant as you have been. But, the results speak for themselves. Keep up the good work.

Since you asked, the forum is fine with its limitations. I read and participate to find and share information about living in Puna. I prefer not to read the diatribes and opinions that don't align with my philosophy; I've heard enough of them and life's too short. The current limitations do not filter out all that I don't care to read, but I am free to not read them and exercise my right to not respond. If some people need ultimate freedom to vent their spleen at opinions they don't agree with, they are, indeed, free to start up their own forum where they can let anyone post about anything, freely speaking their minds. And they can deal with keeping that forum alive and useful.

This forum has been fine with me. I've learned a lot, including more stuff than I care to about some. But that's life.

Thanks, Rob. Good job.

I will begin by admitting that I have not read all the entries in this thread, nor even more than the first... because I already know where I stand.

When I arrived in Hilo, Punaweb was a dead end. It blossomed in the last four years and frankly, I don't think Rob could be doing a better job. Parameters are set but loose. The only general rules are about politics (keep it local) and play nice together & share. Seems to me you can't ask more than that. Most of us SHOULD have learned it in kindergarten and for the few who haven't, learn it now!

Thank you Rob for indulging me in so many ways. This forum has made my adventure into Hawaii a total delight.

Rob,
I think you do a fantastic job!!!! You allow diverse opinions, even those opinions that you may not agree with. You don't try to push your opinions down the throats of the posters and, yet, you contribute by expressing yours. You sometimes step in with a "let's calm things down" post and that's great. The forum one of the most informative, open, and "mature" forums on the Internet. That's a result of your method of monitoring and it's a job that's easily unappreciated. I think your open, objective attitude has been exemplified even by your starting this thread.

I don't entertain "attention-whores" either. Great job Rob!!!
