Add to Glens list of watching rules:

Do not park the car where the flow will go

Myna Bird just reported that it seems someone parked near the flow yesterday & the flow cut off access to the car & may have taken it.... IF this is true, makes you wonder

ED: It is true! So, this rule must be added to Glens list!
There were 5 residents evacuated yesterday from lower Royal Gardens (I think the houses that had the new drives that were graded last year) The two upper residents seem to still be hanging in there, one is riding up through to exit through HVO.... Those guys are tough!

Another quote from the Coan autobiography regarding getting close to the lava, this time in 1855. No Mayor Kim to protect the reverend from himself back then, but Coan sounds pretty confident in his judgement of the situation. The book describes many such edgy forays on to lava rivers and up newly built cones by Coan and his fellow travelers.

quote:
Not a square rod could be found on all this wide expanse where the glowing fusion could not be seen under our feet through holes and cracks in the crust on which we were walking. After venturing some thirty rods upon this sea of fire, we saw just before us an open channel of seething lava, some three hundred feet wide, and whose extreme length above and below we could not see or measure. Of course there was no alternative but to beat a retreat, and we worked our way back to the place whence we started.

To many it may seem strange that any one should venture into such a place; but to a person familiar with the movements of these igneous masses, the danger is not alarming. Fused rock is heavy and of great consistency, and when left quiet for a time under the atmosphere its surface stiffens and congeals, so that I have often walked on a flow that had been liquid only five hours before. We returned to Hilo to report.

If I had to guess, I'd say Pele ate the car belonging to the guy who was poking her with a stick.

As for reporting the loss to the insurance company, I think if the car was overtaken by the lava I would claim it was stolen...by Pele.
maybe not. Might not be a good idea to accuse her of such things.

and a question for Glen.
You have bunnies? I didn't know there were bunnies on the island, like wild Hawaiian bunnies? just living in your lava tube?

Cheers,

I am off-island, but yes, there are two bunnies: A white fluffy one and a brown one. They appear to be a couple (a couple of bunnies). My neighbors inform me there is a small tube system in my front lawn. Big enough for bunnies, but not men. The bunnies disappear into it ....and sometimes show up on neighborhood lawns.

They live off the land (I have grass). They are sensitive to heat though: they will not tolerate temperatures over 2,000 degrees, so I am hoping they will be okay.

Anthony Bourdain from the Travel Network weighs in on his experience at staying at the "Lava House"

...Bourdain visited Thompson at his B&B, “Lava House.” Over the last quarter century, lava flows have almost completely surrounded Lava House but have always spared it....

Uh oh! Please tell me someone else, other than Glen, can see a bunny with strange eyes sitting in the lava in hooligal's pic! It's been a really long winter here (-13 degrees farenheit when I went to work at 7:30 this am.) I hope that I am not starting to see things!

lol,

Marcia
