Fencing: costs......
#1
I was reading the thread about pigs eating up people's gardens and started thinking about my partially fenced property. Parts of it are fenced by a lava rock wall (thank you neighbors!) but most of it is not. I will need it fenced before I come over (sigh...the house that got away was fully fenced). Presume I have a lava rock wall in front (I have one already, but it is not high enough for dogs, so needs to do another two feet) and wish to do chain link elsewhere, does anyone have any idea what that might run on half an acre?

Glen, no idea on the cost, but for the rock wall, there are a lot of topped rock walls (topped with chain link, bamboo, lattice, all sorts). This may be easier and a lot le$$ than trying to match up the topped portion of a wall (some guys can do a great job integrating the rocks, others it looks way funny, with a line all the way down...even the mortars are way off....) Oh, the costs vary with height & the actual dimensions (you may have a 400 x 55 lot with the front 55 already done in stone, costs would be a lot different than a 100 x 205 with one 205 side done...)

Thanks Carey...that's a great idea. I was wondering how they would add the rocks on top so that it doesn't look funny.

I was interested in having a 8 foot chain link installed last time I was there, (quick solution to neighbors from hell) , and I've built plenty of em.. Mine was only 100' it takes two days to gather materials, lay it out, dig the holes (unless it's solid lava, pour really quick-dry concrete, stretch it and wa-la your about done.. I thought at most because Hawaii is more expensive, $1,000 and maybe 1.500 tops? wrong,,, try $3,500.. metal is extremely high and installers want to make double the money on the install.. kind of nice, if there's no solid lava and everything goes fast, smooth, cheap price for this meant two installers, (don't take a genius) make almost 2 grand for two days work.

Obviously if there's solid lava, it gets a lot higher.. you have to rent a drilling jack hammer at 130 a day and pray.
It's been some time, over ten years but, my crew and I used to install it with materails at $1-3 per foot.. while i aint checked here in the midwest, , it can't be more than 5-7 now..

$35 per foot is just nutz..

Check around though, or bring your own fence, ha, ha.. the installers can be found when hunting in the big island for 'metal and or wire products'..

A lot of folks use field fence or horse fence instead of chain link since those are less expensive options. Del's sells the fence and posts if you want to see what's available in Hilo.

I've read the posts but not sure about the price on the chain link fence. If my lot is 8000 sq ft and I need it completely fenced(my dog is an "escape artist" ),how much would be
A)-marerials;
B)-labour?
My lot has no problems.

When I thought I needed some fencing, I was also asked some other questions before they could give a quote. You may want to add these to your request:
1. How high a fence? 4', 5', 6' 8'
2. How many changes of directions? (They wanted to know how many times the fence material had to be cut and refastened versus following a gentle curve)
3. Any special bottom considerations? (Did have a spot where the fence had to bridge a cement retainer?
5. Is the perimeter clear and level (In other words were they cutting through the brush or just following an open space)
6. Is the location flat or wavy? (Guess that matters)

Ended up not needing the fence so never pursued the quote.

Thanks,Bob!
Very detailed advice.I wish I still can get an approximate quote. My lot is leveled and mostly nothing on it.The height - enough for the sob not to jump over(he is an older guy).I don't care about the bottom or upper decor since it will be covered with blossoming vines.
Someone mentioned bringing the links from mainland in the container.
I don't think I want to do that unless the price difference is huge.
