where is the line?
#1
Punaweb is a unique on line community, with its own rules, written and unwritten. My question for the group as a whole, but especially those whose participation goes back more than just a few months, is at what point is someone over the line in terms of quantity of posts? I personally feel like I am dominating the conversation if I post 3 different places on Punaweb in one day, 7 times in a single week still feels like a lot to me. I try to stick to posting on threads where I have something concrete to offer, even though I have opinions about lots of postings. I also feel that limiting my posts also limits the risk of being flamed by a troll. Other people seem to get on once a week or so and then respond to all the threads they are interested in. And still others constantly post on all sorts of threads and start many new ones too. We all know of at least one member who was forced to move on when his constant posting moved from informative to abusive, but this is primarily a self-regulating society here. So I ask of you, where is the line? When does one member go from helpful to overwhelming?

I keep the line in a drawer here in my desk. I try not to let it out too often but occasionally it demands attention.

But is it a straight line or a crooked line? Or maybe a loopy line?

Oh, the jokes -- they just keep coming.

I can't resist.

"I used to keep a line in my desk, too. Of course, I was in college and it was the 80's after all."

Bada bing!

OK I hijacked my own thread! But I still want to know, when does a punawebber cross over from enthusiastic to overboard with postings? One part of the equation for me is that many topics just wither and die if they get bumped to the second page (and the 3rd page is the void) and if one person starts a bunch of threads all at once then other threads can get bumped before most people see them.

It's like the one of the Supreme Court Justice's definition of pornography.

I know it when I see it.

For my part I have no bad feeling toward enthusiasm. And most tempests in a teapot resolve themselves if left alone.

I have been posting like crazy because for the past two months I have been working insanely on a very big and highly unpleasant and complicated project, night and day, constantly at the computer. I take little "breaks" and go to Punaweb and fantasize about my life to be.

It's all good as long as no one member starts to focus on or attack another member. That's when it's all bad. Really important to keep it friendly. When it is unfriendly, that crosses the line I think. But there is a Big Guy who is the final arbiter. And no, it's not John Dirgo!

When you start seeing stuff like Landlords/Renters Beware from a Punawebber that has never even lived in Hawaii.

What is the point in this thread?

It's an attempt at being malicious. It has now been changed several times because the OP (originating poster) realized that it wasn't malicious enough.

Unfortunately for the OP... the person the thread is intended to be harmed... doesn't give a rip what the OP is stating.

Damon,

Battles like this cannot be won. There is only blood on the floor and pain in the air. My advice is leave it alone. I am not going to get involved in who thinks they were offended first and who meant what when they said what.

I don't want to play hall monitor in a middle school today. It's a nice day out. Let's enjoy.
