I heard recently that windmills were forbidden in some zones.
I know that most/all of the subdivisions in Puna are zoned agricultural, which would seem to expressly allow such farm equipment. Does anyone have any knowledge about this in general and how it pertains to Mauna Loa Estates specifically? Mahalo! ArtM

I have had both ... wind generators are inherently noisy. (especially true if mounted nearby as on a vessel or cabin ) - I had one for several years ...finally traded it for a eu1000 grin.. my current mainland off place runs just fine on 250 watts of solar (4x64 watt unisolars ... they are shade tolerant and have been in place about ten years ) 8 kw of storage in us 64's (6 volt in series, changed out every three years or so ...pencils out better than rolls or surrete batteries for me ) an 1kw honda eu1000 for cloudy months as well as a 30 amp charger (Iota makes nice ones) and a 1200 watt inverter... for big heavy loads I use an honda eu2000... or for welding etc a chinese 12kw diesel mated to a 75 amp Iota charger for the house bank, switchable between the 2k and 12k genset
I can rely on solar alone march through october... I roll out the gensets come winter or special for projects -welding, washing machines etc .. the eu 1000 burns a gallon every 12 hrs the eu 2000 burns a gallon every 6-8 hrs the diesel genset burns a quart per hr. In the off grid place I use about 500 watts to 2 kw per day here in hawaii with electric rather than propane fridge I use about 7 i.m.o. the key for living with solar is extreme conservation not bigger systems, shifting the heavy refrigeration demands to propane - 1 gallon a week to run the fridge another for the freezer is important ... hope this helps

ArtM, Moana Loa is going to require a very high mount, and if at all noisy will draw complaints in that somewhat upscale residential neighborhood!
